Inventory Analysis of particleboard (PB) made by Japanese Mills Nobuaki HATTORI*1), Satoshi TERASHIMA1), Keisuke ANDO1), Tomiyuki HIMENO2) 1)Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology 2)Japan Fiberboard and Particleboard Manufacturers Association *hattori@cc.tuat.ac.jp
Background ◎Japan Fiberboard and Particleboard Manufacturers Association (JFPMA) • Manufacturers association of boards consists of 19 companies ◎Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Hattori Laboratory (TUAT) • One research groups about LCA for wooden materials and houses in Japan JFPMA wishes to know about environmental loads for boards produced by the members of JFPMA and enforcethat wooden boards are environmental friendly materials compared to other materials.
Usage of PB in Japan Building:base for flooring, subfloor, wall, structural wall, roofboard Furniture, joiner:kitchen furniture, desk, storage furniture Courtesy:JFPMA
Goal and scope for PB • Quantitative calculation of PB from cradle to production and know the average environmental load produced in Japan which leads to the basic unit. • To know environmental loads and show the estimated damage according to the impact assessment by Life cycleImpact assessment Method based on Endpoint modeling (LIME).
About LIME (Life cycle Impactassessment Methodbased onEndpoint modeling) • Modest impact assessment tool developed by LCA Research Center of AIST, Tsukuba. • Environmental loads caused by one thousand materials and eighty land use have been assessed in LIME. • These loads were converted to money value like Japanese yen by questionnaire based on conjoint analysis and treated statistically which is supposed to be a global standard in the field of LCA.
Goal and scope for PB 【Functional unit】 1 tonof PB 【Foreground data】 Interview investigation to six mills of four companies from Hokkaido, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Osaka, Fukui and Yamaguchi (Domestic production share 39.6 %) 【Data quality】 April, 2005 ~ March, 2006 (one year) 【Background data】JEMAI-LCA Pro Ver.2.1.1, Sawada, Ando, Hattori, Tamura, Mokuzai gakkaishi,52(4), 235-240 (2006) and so forth 【Impact assessment】LIME
Goal and scope for PB 【Environmental load analyzed】 Resource consumption : LNG, crude oil, coal Emission to air:CO2 from fossil fuel (f-CO2), CO2 from biomass (b-CO2), dust (moving source), dust (point source), hydro carbon, NMHC, SOx, NOx(moving source), NOx (point source), N2O, CH4 Waste:Incinerated ash 【Impact category analyzed】 Global warming, acidification, ozone depletion, air pollution, photochemical oxidant, resource consumption and waste
Transportation Transportation Goal and scope for PB Process of PB Chip production Waste wood Transportation Adhesive production Transportation Crude oil extraction Commodity production Use Transportation PB production Waste System boundary
Inventory of PB Input and output table for 1 ton of PB production by weighted average Domestic production share was 39.6 %
Inventory of PB Environmental loads for 1 ton of PB production by weighted average
Inventory of PB Environmental loads for 1 ton of PB production
Impact assessment of PB Estimated damage for 1 ton of PB production by weighted average
Impact assessment of PB Estimated damage of major process for 1 ton of PB production Major damage were chip drying and hot pressing in PB production process.
Impact assessment of PB Estimated damage for 1 ton of PB production
Conclusions • f-CO2, dust and SOx contributed much to the estimated damage among all environmental loads. • f-CO2 decreases much when wood waste is used as fuel for boiler. But, dust is released more into the atmosphere which increases the estimated damage. • The percentage of b-CO2 was high in PB production. But, this load will be able to deduct to zero by the concept of carbon neutral. • The estimated damages for 1t of PB production were 1,424 yen.
Next targets • Inventory analysis and impact assessment for insulation fiberboard (IB), medium density fiberboard (MDF) and hardboard (HB). • Creation of their basic units by the inventory.
Acknowledgement We appreciate six mills owned by four companies for cooperation of inventory analysis.
