  1. 2/5/14 Shine Like A Star With Your Warm-Up • Are there more grains of sand on Earth or stars in the universe? • What is a leap year? Why do we have leap years? • How big is the Earth compared to the Sun? • How big is our Sun compared to other stars? • Why is the Equator warmer than the North and South Poles?

  2. Do Now 2/6/14 Define the following words: • Astronomy • Geocentric model • Heliocentric model • Revolution • Rotation

  3. Do Now 2/7/14 • Put the following in order from largest to smallest: solar system, sun, galaxy, universe, planet • Where did the study of astronomy originate? • If you could travel to any planet which one would it be? Why?

  4. Look at the 7 pictures on the paper, answer question 1-3 on your paper

  5. Astronomy ASTRONOMY

  6. Astronomy fill-in-the-blank Start on page 614 • First section chapter 21 • 2nd section chapter 23

  7. Scale of the Universe http://htwins.net/scale/ http://htwins.net/scale2/

  8. First, some perspective. . .

  9. Make Sure You Know This! Universe Galaxy Solar System Sun Planets How Old It Is How Big It Is

  10. Scale of the Universe: One more way to think about it. . . Think about Independence High School, which was built first, Room 209, or the school? My room is like a planet, and the school is like the solar system

  11. Forget

  12. The Earth in the Universe The Motion of our Home. . .

  13. Earth Motions: Draw This In Your Notes

  14. Quick Video About Rotation • http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=EF21D20B-2294-47B7-85A1-7C41B7A537A6&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=DETB

  15. Rotation • Counter-Clockwise Spinning on the axis • Takes about 24 hours, result is Day and Night • Without Rotation, there would be a burning hot “Day” side and a freezing cold “Night side of the Earth

  16. Why does the Earth spin? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQxeutcYP6I

  17. Revolution • The Earth’s counter-clockwise elliptical (oval shaped) orbit around the sun • Takes 365 ¼ days, helps give us the seasons • If Revolution stopped one hemisphere would experience eternal summer, while the other would experience winter

  18. Revolution

  19. Precession • Earth is tilted 23.5⁰ off center, this means parts of the Earth are closer to the Sun than other parts • Precession gives us seasons, because of the tilt, one hemisphere or the other receives more sun light (summer), the other hemisphere gets less light (winter) • If precession stopped, we wouldn’t have seasons. . .

  20. Nutation • Nutation is a wobble in the Earth’s precession caused entirely by the moon’s gravity tugging on the Earth • If nutation stopped, the “changing” location of stars in the Earth’s night sky would be limited

  21. What do you see in this video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGaQXx5lDWo&feature=related

  22. 10 Rare Astronomical Events http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp4OIzvqE9k

  23. Music Time. . . 1. Split into pairs (choose wisely, this will be graded) 2. On your Album/ Paper, create 8 (or more) song titles that show your knowledge of: • Where the Earth is in the universe, and the size of the Earth compared to the rest of the universe- at least 1 title • The Earth’s motions (Rotation, Revolution, Precession, Nutation)- at least 4 titles, one about each movement • What happens because of the Earth’s movements (Eclipses, Seasons, Tides, etc.)- at least 2 title • What might happen if these movements stopped- at least 1 title Funny is great, showing your knowledge is a must!!! You can use your notes (and the book if you really want)
