  2. Presentation Overview • History of interest areas • Use of interest areas with exploratory students • Presentation of data • Roundtable discussion

Why do interest areas exist? • Graduation Planning System • Provides roadmaps to degree completion • Categorized degree system to assist students select a major • 45 Credit Hour Rule • Students in the Exploratory or Generalist majors need to have declared their major by the time they reach 45 KSU credit hours.

  4. Why do interest areas exist? Exploratory students who select their major within first year have higher retention rates then those that do not.

  5. Use of the Interest Areas • All majors are broken into 13 interest areas. A major may be in more than one interest area. • During the KSU admissions process Exploratory students can select one of 13 interest areas on their application. • This is not required. Fall 09 only 20 students selected during the application process. • During Destination Kent State students were asked to rank their interest areas. • They were asked to rank again later in the semester.
