  2. "So Hrothgar's men lived happy in his hall till the monster stirred, that demon, that fiend, Grendel, who haunted the moors, the wild marshes, and made his home in a hell not hell but earth."(lines 15-19) Grendel is evil, he terrorizes the mead hall. ”King Hrothgar of Denmark hired a warrior named Beowulf who is loved by the people of geatland to rid his people of the sinister Grendel.”(lines 112-118) Beowulf is a great warrior. “Then when the darkness dropped Grendel went up to Herot, wondering what the warriors would do in that hall when their drinking was done. He found them sprawled in sleep suspecting nothing their dreams undisturbed. The monsters thoughts were as quick as his greed or his claws he slipped thru the door in silence snatched up 30 men, smashed them and ran out with their bodies.” (Lines 30-38) Grendal is so big that he kills 30 men in one shot. Beowulf is loved by the Geats because of his heroism and the Danes are happy he arrived.(line 118 and 125-130) Section One

  3. "I swam in the blackness of night, hunting monsters out of the ocean, and killing them one by one, death was my errand and the fate they had earned. Now Grendel and I are called together and I've come." (line 155-160)  “You’re Beowulf, are you the same boastful fool who fought a swimming match with Brecca” (lines 239-241) He was strong to defeat Brecca. “My hands alone shall fight for me, struggle for life against the monster” (lines 171-173) This shows that Beowulf is a fair fighter. " that the monster scorn of men is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none. Nor will I." (Lines 167-169) This also shows how confident he is that he will win the fight against Grendal. Section Two

  4. Beowulf is sleeping when Grendel comes to attach him. Beowulf allows him to kill one of his 14 men. (lines 421-422) “The victory, for the proof hanging high from the rafters where Beowulf had hung it, it was the monsters arm, claw, shoulder and all” (lines 515-518) Beowulf hung the arm as a trophy. After his fight with Beowulf, Grendel ran back to his home to die by his mother. Hurt by seeing her son die, Grendel's mother make her way over to Beowulf . Section Three

  5. Grendel's mom comes and steels Grendel’s arm and takes Hrothgar’s closest friend and goes back to the swamp. Beowulf fallows her back and they battle . “They wrestled, she ripped and tore and clawed at him, Bit holes in his helmet and that too failed him.” (lines 601-603)
