  2. What is a bloomer?

  3. Who’s Amelia Bloomer? • One of the first women to wear bloomers. Today almost all girls wear slacks or jeans, but back in 1851, Amelia was a radical. Now there is a book award named for her, the Amelia Bloomer Project List. The books on the Amelia Bloomer Project list encourage and inspire girls to be smart, brave, and proud.

  5. Inside Out : a memoir in pictures by Nadia Shivak • A true story told as a graphic novel about a young girl and her battle with her eating disorder, Ed. She would draw pictures on her napkin to help her keep her food down and the voices out of her head. These drawings and others make up this book.

  6. The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks: a novel by E. Lockhart • Frankie is attending a rich private school where she is dating the most popular boy on campus. When she discovers he is the head of a secret society, The Order of the Beagles, she wants to join, but finds out the club is only open to boys.

White Sands, Red Menaceby Ellen Klages • Following the explosion of the first atomic bomb, Dewey, who is fascinated with science, is living with her friends the Gordons while Mr. Gordon works to develop the V-2 rocket. His wife is fighting against the dangers of radiation and wants him to stop.

  8. The Surrender Tree: poems of Cuba's struggle for freedomby Margarita Engle • A story written in verse about the wars in Cuba from 1868-1898. The main narrator is Rosa, a young girl who uses herbs to help heal those injured by war. She must hide her hospitals in jungles and caves to keep them open.

  9. The Hunger Gamesby Suzanne Collins • In a future society, the U.S. has been destroyed and replaced by 12 districts. Each district must send two young people to take part in the Hunger Games where they must fight to survive. Only one person will live to win. The rest of the country is forced to watch on television.

  10. The Case of the Peculiar Pink Fan by Nancy Springer • Set in Victorian England, Enola Holmes, younger sister of Sherlock Holmes, discovers that one of her friends has been kidnapped and is being forced into an arranged marriage. Enola and Sherlock work to rescue her.

  11. Beneath My Mother's Feetby Amjad Kamar • Set in India, a 14-year-old Pakistani girl, Nazia, discovers how quickly life can change. When her construction worker father is injured on the job., her mother secures employment as a house cleaner, which in her culture is a disgrace. Nazia is asked to assist her mother in cleaning, and realizes that her dreams of finishing school are becoming faint. When her dowry is stolen, her dreams of marriage are stolen also.

  12. The Wild Girlsby Pat Murphy • In 1972, Joan's father gets a new job and they move to California. Joan goes exploring and meets Sarah (Fox). The two immediately become friends. The girls have written a short story together for a class project, which Joan submits to a contest. They win and earn themselves spots in a unique writing workshop run by Verla Volante. There, Verla's assignments and writing advice help them learn about themselves and deal with their family problems.
