Public health development and Careers – what does the future hold?www.phorcast.org.uk
Objectives: • Get your views on where public health careers are going in the new “climate” • How can PHORCaST help now; how can it be developed to help you further as part of overall development of the public health workforce in Scotland
Brief presentations • Focused discussions • Write up • Circulation for wider input • PH Workforce Development Group to review • Follow up action including “upgrade” of site for Scotland
About PHORCaST • UK-wide resource, funded by DH England and the 3 devolved administrations (Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales) • Information on the breadth of ph careers and how to attain them • Developed by: partnership Solutions for Public Health (f, East Midlands Healthcare Workforce Deanery • Project overseen by Board with 4 UK countries and key national public health stakeholders • Long-term destination ?Public Health England
Who the website is for • Those wishing to enter a career in ph/wishing to find out more about their role in ph (including young people, third sector etc) • Those working in ph who may wish to develop their career further/move around within ph (i.e. the whole of the public health workforce!) Plus: • Those working in education, workforce planning, employers
Why developed • Issues of recruitment/retention in ph in some parts of the UK – need to get “brightest and best”/attract in school leavers • No single place to find information on the breadth of career opportunities and roles in public health • People no idea how to get started – finding out about jobs, applying for jobs, developing themselves
Feedback to date: • Steady traffic since launch March 2010 • Most via linked websites Comments: “Thanks heaps for creating such an informative website full of interesting resources and in particular career profiles. It’s just what we have been waiting for.” “The site looks excellent, is easy to navigate.” “It looks really good and is a valuable resource for careers adviser and students.”
The Public Health Workforce in a changing climate: • Cuts (ph staff going now) • Structural change England (?to come in Scotland) • Public health workforce issues (Regulation of multidisciplinary public health – confusion following Review of Regulation and PH White Paper) Impact: • Where people will sit/who will employ • Pattern of careers • Development
England changes: • Public Health England (who is in, what will it do?) • DsPH moving to local government (unitaries and upper tier) (who, how many, how will it work) • GP Commissioning Consortia accountable to NHS Commissioning Board (how will public health advice be accessed?) • “Any willing provider” (will a range of organisations house the ph delivery service in future – third sector, social enterprise, trusts)
Impact: What we are starting to look at in England • New kinds of careers • Models of working • Will the “generalist” role survive? • Skills development and “kite” marking
How can PHORCaST help? • New sections on local government, social enterprise, civil service etc • More on how people can help themselves during change and recession • Provide news, updates as changes happen, communication (e-alerts – could be more?), events management system
What do you want? 1. How do you see the future ph workforce changing in Scotland? 2. What are the current issues? 3. What will be needed to support change? 4. How can PHORCaST be improved to help you?
