History of Upward Bound • The Federal TRIO Programs include eight outreach and support programs targeted to help disadvantaged students progress from middle school to post baccalaureate programs. • The history of TRIO is progressive. It began with Upward Bound, which emerged out of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 in response to the Administrations War on Poverty. • Upward Bound Programs provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. • The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rates at which participants enroll in and graduate from institutions of post secondary education.
Upward Bound • We recruit low-income (income eligible)1st-Gen students from 6 target high schools – their obstacles? • Academic components Summer, fall, and spring core course sessions designed to supplement their high school work Tutoring at target schools SPAN Take 6 Upward Bound Bridge • Retention based components Mentoring at target schools (need mentors) 6 week summer residential College tours Cultural activities Summer work-study Parent meetings
Benefits Outcome • IUPUI Upward Bound provides a boosts in the number of citizens that get the opportunity to participate in higher education that would ordinarily not. • Human Capital (they come back).
