  2. Atlantic Campaign – Battle of Britain • German’s air attacked England, trying to get them to surrender • England fought back • England used radar for first time • Germany lost 2,300+ planes • England lost 800

  3. Atlantic Campaign – Dunkirk Evacuation • British troops evacuated 200,000 British and 100,000 French troops from beaches of Dunkirk • Troops had been trapped by Germans • Took 9 days, civilians helped out

  4. Atlantic Campaign – Battle of Stalingrad • Germany fought Allies in Soviet Union • Hitler forbad troops from surrendering, but the commanding officer ignored him • Over 190,000 died from battle and starvation

Atlantic Campaign – D-Day • June 6, 1944 • Video - http://www.army.mil/d-day/ • 160,000 Allied troops landed on 50 mile stretch of German controlled French beaches. • General Eisenhower in charge • 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported invasion • 9,000 Allied soldiers died, but 100,000 started to march towards Germany and Hitler.

  7. Atlantic Campaign – Battle of Bulge • German troops surprised attacked US in Belgium. • Tried to divide the Allies, did not work. • Encircled troops, looked like a bulge. • Germany lost battle. • American’s lost 81,000+, Germany lost 100,000

  8. Pacific Campaign – Battle of Midway • Japanese planned to attack island, we knew, went to stop them. • American’s won, losing 1 ship while Japanese lost 4. • Turning point in the Pacific war!

  9. Pacific Campaign – Battle of Guadalcanal • America’s first counter attack in the Pacific. • Fighting for control of island took a long time and was very difficult. • American’s finally won!

  10. Pacific Campaign – Battle of Iwo Jima • Japanese fought to the death. • Island encompasses 8 square miles. • 24,000+ American Casualties, 6,800 deaths. • Only 212 Japanese taken prisoner out of 22,000.

  11. Pacific Campaign – Battle of Okinawa • Japanese ordered to hold island at any cost • Kamikaze – suicide pilots – used a lot • American’s: 7,300+ died, 32,000+ wounded. • Japanese: 107,000 died, 7,400 prisoner
