  1. Bose-Einstein Condensate:Another State of Mater By: Raymon, Sukhversh, Amerpreet, Serena, Panuga

  2. Definition of BEC Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is a state of matter that consists of a collection of atoms near absolute zero; all the atoms have the lowest possible quantum energy state

  3. Satyendra Nath Bose Born in January, 1894, in Kolkata, India A physicist who worked with Albert Einstein Goal: Find the existence of another state of matter; the fifth state of matter

  4. Bose and Einstein’s Collaboration In the 1920s, they both hypothesized that if a collection of atoms were cold enough, they would be in the lowest possible quantum energy state = identical energy Identical Energy → All occupy the same place at the same time

  5. What is a Condensate? After Bose and Einstein’s discovery, scientist referred to it as a state of condensate A condensate is now another state of matter It is a pile of atoms in the same place at the same time with identical energy

  6. When does Bose-Einstein condensate exist? The only temperatures within a few billionths of a degree of absolute zero (0K or -273.15oC) At 0K, all the atoms are at their lowest possible quantum energy state → identical energy → occupy same place at same time

  7. Application of BEC It was not until 1995 that the first condensate was created in a laboratory. No one knows how BEC can be used for practical application Some discoveries are not meant for practical use, it is to learn more about the universe This is an example of quantum theory predicting an actual material result
