  3. Correlational Studies: LOOKING FOR REALATIONSHIPS • Descriptive researchlast time= Tests, Survey, Observation, Case Study…Looking for relationship between 2 or more phenomenon • F.E. Students G.P.A related to hrs. of T.V. watching

  4. MEASURING CORRELATIONS • Correlation=Relationship • HOWEVER technically correlation is numerical strength of 2 “THINGS” • Could be scores, events, related things • Things= Variables- Can vary in quantifiable ways • F.E. height, weight, scores= Measured and scored, or rated

  5. + correlations • Positive correlation- high values of 1 variable with a high value of another. OR low values of 1 variable with low values of another • F.E. height and weight pos. Corr. And I.Q. and school grades • HOWEVER no correlation perfect. Tall people weigh less, average I.Q. still class superstar

  7. - correlations • Negative correlations- high values of 1 Variable with low values of another • F.E. Average income and fewer dental problems, Older the car (high) less money (low) • No relationship= Uncorrelated • F.E. height in inches and aggressiveness

Coefficient of Correlation • Statistic used to express a correlation. =C.O.C. • Size and correlation • Perfect Positive correlation +1.00 and perfect negative correlation. -1.00 • F.E. weigh 10 people lightest, heaviest; Then measured height shortest to tallest. IF lists match= height and weight +1.00

Cautions about Correlations • A Correlation does not necessarily establish a causation • Easy to predict A predicts B • Study shows Positive correlation: ages 1-3 T.V. and watching and attention problems • Perhaps kids with Attention problems seek out T.V., distractible kids have TV. for babysitter • Maybe parents have attention problems and therefore manifest attention prob. Environment
