2. ¡¿Whichword do I choose?! • Looking up words in a Spanish/English dictionary can be confusing. Often times a word can have many different meanings and many different translations. • So how can we make sure we are looking up the right word? • Let’s take a look…..

3. Pick yourword • First of all, let’s choose a word. For example: Wheel • If we look up the word wheel in our Spanish/English dictionary, we will find an entry that may look something like this…

5. Looks confusing huh? How do we decide which word is the right translation of “wheel”? • Well first we need to think about how we are going to use that word in a sentence. Are we using the word as a noun, or as a verb. • If we want to say “the wheel of the bus goes round and round” then wheel is being used as a noun. • If we want to say “She wheeled around in her chair, “ then wheel is being used as verb. • On the dictionary entry, you will see certain words that let you know if the translation is a noun or a verb. • If it is a noun, the word “sustantivo” will be present • If it is a verb, the word “verbo” will be present

To narrow them down we need to decide what type of wheel we are talking about. Anywhere that you see the ~ sign, substitute in the word “wheel.” This will help give you an idea of the different types of wheels being discussed.
