My presentation will be on my view of the PRIORITIES at TMU (subject to changes with your input)
TMU has many strengths Students Faculty Staff Board
Which of the following groups am I serving? Students Faculty Staff Board
STUDENT-FIRST MENTALITY Without students: There is no need for TMU to exist Research and patient care can be carried out by non-educational entities
STUDENTS are the priority of your and my responsibilities
We need to make every effort to improve the learning environment to raise competent, honest and compassionate health care professionals.
The job is not just for the Dean of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs
VP Chen: Our job is not to spoil or make life easy for students.
A major TMU weakness Relying to much on tuitions and fees paid by STUDENTS to operate the University
Rank/School Score Peer Residency GPA MCAT NIH 1/Harvard 100 4.9 4.7 3.80 11.4 731.9 2/Hopkins 94 4.9 4.7 3.86 11.3 348.2 3/Wash U 91 4.7 4.4 3.83 12.2 310.5 6/UCSF 87 4.7 4.5 3.77 11.2 287.6
TMU is getting as much public dollars as most state supported medical colleges in USA.
As the president My other top priority is to guide and assist the faculty to raise money to generate new revenues to turn around money-losing operations So that the financial burden of students to maintain TMU can be reduced. (Remember student-first mentality)
TMU is entering a very difficult period in the coming years The new multi-purpose building needs huge maintenance expenses that cannot be derived from more students to pay tuitions and fees.
Existing and Future Loans • Loans to equip Wan-Fang Hosp. and set up its operation • Loans to build and equip the Multi-purpose Medical Building • Loans to build and equip the 3rd Hosp. Building • Loans to develop the 2nd campus
TMAC Report(draft) TMU should be “small and beautiful”
You and I should strive to be outstanding teachers visionary academic leaders no-nonsense administrators effective managers persuasive salespersons
If we love TMU, we should avoid being Self-centered Self-serving Self-promoting (The president has to lead and set the example)
If we love TMU, we should try our best NOT to have our own personal agenda or self interest above TMU (The president has to lead and set the example)
3 Chinese vs. 3 Japanese TMU cannot afford to continue factional infighting Example: Alumni vs. the Board
I have heard and read a lot about statements from people who fight the Board or me based on their love for TMU Example 1: A plan to rally in front of trustees’ office Example 2: Campaigns by LA alumni
Let’s NOT take sides on ideological issues and remain above politics or factional interests
The TMU Bran Name The reputation, stature and “commercial” values of TMU may be in jeopardy if negative reports continue to appear in the TMU web pages and newspaper.
As the president I will NOT represent or belong to any TMU faction (You should correct me if I fail to do so on any occasion)
As the president I will NOT compete with the TMU Faculty for resources (You should correct me if I fail to do so on any occasion)
We need to have a global view to see all 5 Colleges aiming for balanced development of all Colleges I will have more respect for anyone coming to me with TMU, not just his or her own college in mind
Let’s compete to see who loves TMU more By actions not talking (A bible story about King Solomon)
I will be a president who will NOT be a blind follower of the TMU board
I will be a president who is NOT afraid to provide constructive feedback to the TMU board
I will be a president who will strive to be an effective, innovative and friendly mediator of the TMU Board and TMU Faculty, Students and Staff
The person who posted a statement labeling me as a puppet of the Board does NOT know me.
As the president I see only MERIT not personal relationship in making decisions. (You should correct me if I fail to do so on any occasion)
The MERIT is based on contributions to TMU
Let’s also focus on Merit NOT personal relationship
Let’s put the right people at the right spot .
Let’sbe Color blind Gender blind and be blind about individuals’ backgrounds
The greatest strength of the US, the only superpower is DIVERSITY Who sent men to the moon? A team with diverse ethnic backgrounds
A great strength of developed countries is Law and Order Show me an exception if you know one.
We need to abide by the law and be clear of any conflict of interest (The president has to lead and set the example)
For TMU to be great, we need to be leaders of principle and integrity (The president has to lead and set the example)
We need to be innovative and dynamic Conventional wisdom will not carry TMU very far Example: IT as a major driving force for TMU
The Millenium of Digital Technnology 0110011111010010
Real Estate NTU College of Medicine vs. TMU
Innovation, not real estate is the most important property This is the digital technology era!!! Can TMU compete and even beat NTUMC? Anything is not impossible in the e-Century. Companies that started operation from a garage: Apple and Hewlett & Packard The world’s largest company that started the business in a backwater county in Arkansas (49th richest state in the US): Walmart
Business Operation “Economic growth in the past decade was largely built upon increased productivity with better use of electronic technology” A. Greenspan, Chair of the Board of the Federal Central Banks
General Electric Jack Welsh’s story
Business Operation Productivity and Efficiency Simulation laboratories Internet-based teaching and services Paperless administrative structure Chartless patient services (to solve shortage of teachers and staff)
It will save us a lot of resources, efforts and time if we focus on substance, not style
Let’s avoid the major management flaw by not being micromanagers Ronald Reagan vs. Jimmy Carter
