  1. Studying Geography

  2. Geography is the study of the earth’s physical and cultural features. • In history, just like today, when an event occurs, we ask “where did it happen.?” • “Who was there?” • This is why we need to study geography. • Geography includes mountains, rivers, people, cities and countries. • Studying geography, means learning about landforms, climate, environments, maps, regions, and resources.

  3. Physical geography is the study of the earth’s land and features • Physical geographers study landforms, the natural features of the lands surface. • Landforms could be mountains, valleys, plains, hills, cliffs, etc.

  4. Our earth is full of a variety of landforms.

  5. What landforms would one find in Palos Verdes?

  6. When studying geography, we also examine climate. Climate is the pattern of weather conditions over a long period of time.

  7. Climate is not the same as weather. • Weather is the conditions at a specific time or place. • If you say your city has cold winters, you are talking about ____________ . • If you say it is below freezing and snowing today, you are talking about the _________________ .

  8. Climate affects many features of a region. • For example, it affects plant life. • Tropical rain forests require warm air and heavy rain, while a dry climate can create deserts.

  9. Climate also affects landforms • For example, constant winds can wear down mountains into flat plains.

  10. Landforms and climate are part of a place’s environment. The environment includes all the living and nonliving things that affect life in an area.

  11. When we study environments, we examine the area’s climate.

  12. When we study environments, we examine the area’s landforms.

  13. When we study environments, we examine an area’s water.

  14. When we study environments, we examine an area’s plants.

  15. When we study environments, we examine an area’s soil.

  16. When we study environments, we examine an area’s animals and other features.

  17. Human geography is the study of people and the places where they live.

  18. Human geography deals with how the environment affects people. For example, how do people who live near rivers protect themselves from floods?

  19. How do people who live in deserts survive?

  20. Do different environments affect the size of families?

  21. Do people in certain environments live longer?

  22. We also study location in geography. Location is the exact description of where something is.

  23. Geography effects resources. • Resources are material people find in the earth that people need and value.

  24. What are the most important resources to us humans?
