  4. Students from PUI’s • Fewer CSC classes than at larger schools. • May have never met a graduate student. • Yet, strong track record as source of Ph.D.s • Example: 1998 study found of 20 schools with highest ratio of students obtaining Ph.D.s in math and physical sciences, 10 were liberal arts colleges. • Our REU Program Caters to these students!

  5. Project Areas • Natural Language Processing • Computer Generated Holography • Performance Modeling • Computer Supported Cooperative Work • Pen-based Computing • Low-vision assistive technology

  6. Pen-Based Electronic Classroom

  7. Additional Activities • Regular (weekly) lunches • Team work preparation • How to give a presentation • Presentations by students • Graduate school information sessions • Overnight trip to graduate school • Visiting speakers (including former students) • Final presentation, abstracts, posters • Follow up projects and conferences

  8. Summary Statistics • 76 students have participated • 41% underrepresented • 50% for 5 of last 6 summers • 37% of graduates have gone to graduate school or taken research positions • 67% for graduates of the most recent three year grant

  9. Dissemination and Follow Up • 5 Refereed Papers with 14 Student Authors • 60 Student Abstracts and Undergraduate Conference Presentations • Argonne Symposium for Undergraduate Research • ACM Student Poster Competition

  10. Things That Are Working Well • Theme housing (rigid requirement) • Overnight trip (timing for group cohesion) • Abstracts required at end of summer • Posters required at end of summer • Taking posters back to home schools

  11. A Suggestion for Others • Received an NSF-MRI (Major Research Instrumentation) grant for equipment to be used in part by REU students. • MRI Program provides equipment for “Research and Research Training.” • Very easy to build the case for Research Training based on ongoing REU activities. • Closing date January 23rd.
