Digital Media & Communications Instructor: Mr. Robbins Objective: IDENTIFY various basic digital video shot compositions & JUSTIFY how depth and movement make shots more interesting The Basics: Camera Shots
Basic Camera Shots Framing & Distance
Extreme Long Shot • Also called an Establishing Shot • Provides a clear view of the environment or “setting” for the pictures. • Often used to show landscapes or provide a wide view • (Example: city, town, or even galaxy)
Long Shot • Used to show the full subject • Viewer able to clearly establish the setting the subject is standing in
Medium Shot • Usually shows “half” the subject • If subject is human typically a shot from the waist up • Subject tends to be the focus • The background begins to blur
Close-up Shot • Usually shows part of the subject • If subject is human typically a head shot • Subject is the focus • The background limited or non-existent
Extreme Close-up Shot • Usually shows a limited part of the subject • If subject is human typically a portion of the face, skin, or body • Subject is the only focus • The background non-existent
Basic Camera Shots • Panning • Crabbing • Tracking Movement • Zooming • Pedding • Tilting
Panning Shot • Camera position is fixed or stationary • Usually on a tripod • Operator turns side to side in a smooth motion http://youtu.be/xPI4aAn59_E
Tilting Shot • Camera position is fixed or stationary • Usually on a tripod • Operator moves up or down in a smooth motion http://youtu.be/1t9paTSQq7Y
Tracking Shot • Camera moves with the action • Follows or “tracks” the subjects in action • Can be on a tripod, in hand, or rigged to operator • Operator moves camera smoothly to stay with the action
Tracking Shot • Signature shot of Director Martin Scorsese • Long duration shot from start to finish with one camera and no cuts • Made Famous in “Goodfellas”
Camera rigged to operator via Stedicam • Scorsese initially opposed Stedicamusage because of strain on operators (Weighs about 75 pounds before camera is mounted to it.) • 8 Takes needed to get the shot right from start to finish…choreography worked perfectly…one actor kept making a mistake on his lines.
