Office of the Dean • Welcome and thank you all for coming! • The past six months have been a remarkable case study in leadership across all industries as well as the SUS • From Obama to Wagoner to higher education • How does one best lead through financial crisis? • How can one be appropriately responsive while at the same time continuing to build the dream? • USF has been exceptionally optimistic and forward-looking • In a decade, we may reflect on 2009 as one of the best ever hiring years for our college

5. Graduate and Undergraduate Studies • New PhDs approved by BOG • Sociology, History, Political Science – conjoined disciplinary programs focused on sustainable community in a globalized world • MS in Material Science awaiting BOG review

Graduate and Undergraduate Studies Admissions Highlights: FTIC Fall 2008 • Enrollees up 2% • Average GPA 3.73, SAT 1160 both up 1% • Enrolled 22 National Merit, 4 National Achievement and 8 National Hispanic Scholars (12% overall increase) • There is a growing focus on identifying students who may qualify for national awards and giving them support to achieve them

Graduate and Undergraduate Studies Undergraduate Student Headcount Total University enrollment Fall 2007 – 34,447 Fall 2008 – 35,224 (2.3% increase) CAS enrollment (majors) Fall 2007 – 12,822 Fall 2008 – 13,349 (4.1% increase) Undergraduate enrollment is up in CAS and the university but is not expected to grow more in the future

Graduate and Undergraduate Studies Graduate Student Headcount Total University enrollment Fall 2007 – 8,338 Fall 2008 – 8,630 (3.5% increase) CAS enrollment Fall 2007 – 1877 (MA/S 1190; PhD 687) Fall 2008 – 1805 (MA/S 1106; PhD 699) (3.8% decrease, mainly in MAs) In order to achieve the ratio we want between graduate and undergraduate students, it is important that we steadily increase graduate enrollment particularly at the doctoral level

9. Research and Scholarship 2009 Summer Grant Writing Workshops Despite budget cuts, the Office of Research & Innovation has again funded this valued workshop series, offered in 3 tracks: • NEH Track, led by Roger Ariew • NIH Track, led by Cheryl Kirstein • NSF Track, led by Jeff Ryan

10. Research and Scholarship Highlights in Research A small sample of the outstanding research happening in CAS Drs. Heydt and Levine, along with Adam Buben (Philosophy )for their hard earned ACLS and Fulbright Fellowship Awards Dr. Anne Latowsky (World Languages), NEH Fellowship Dr. Casey Miller (Physics), funded by AFOSF Young Investigator Program for investigating nanoscale giant magnetocaloric alloys Dr. Jon Antilla (Chemistry) won a NSF-CAREER award ($550K over 5 years) Dr. Tom Crisman (IB), Patel Professor of Environment, was elected chair of the board of advisors for the US-Israel Binational Science Foundation based in Jerusalem Dr. Marc Karver (Psychology) received a $1.5M grant to evaluate the state of Florida’s efforts to reduce the rate of suicide in youths aged 10 to 24 Drs. Jon Rottenberg and Kristen Salomon (Psychology) won a 2-year grant from the National Institute of Mental Health

Research and Scholarship Highlights in Scholarship A small sample of the outstanding scholarly productivity happening in CAS Dr. Michael Angrosino (Anthropology) won the 2008 Annual Society for Humanistic Anthropology Fiction Award for his ethnographic short story, "The Shrine” Dr. Antoinette Jackson (Anthropology) won the Vera Green Publication Award for her paper, "Changing Ideas about Heritage and Heritage Resource Management in Historically” Dr. Jay Hopler (English) was nominated and was a finalist for the 2009 Rome Prize --The American Academy of Arts & Letters/American Academy in Rome Dr. Precious McKenzie (English) won the 2008 Cecilia Konchar Farr Award for Best Feminist Essay "Mary Kingsley: 'Set Yourself to Gain Personal  Power’” Dr. Xiaomei Jiang and Mr. Jason Lewis (Physics) were semi-finalists at the Oak Ridge Labs Global Venture Challenge with their work on small solar cells Ms. Aki Nakanishi (PhD student, Anthropology) was awarded a top prize at the Education without Borders conference for her work on Participatory Action Research with young people—just this week!

Research and Scholarship • Special program this year and next to attract 5 talented post-docs for appointments in SLASS • CAS Internal Awards continue to seed research and scholarly endeavors • The Office of Research & Scholarship continues to work with faculty to provide assistance identify funding, field budget questions, help review proposal content, etc. • Need help? Facilities, Safety, and Security New CAS Space ISA • The architectural firm HOK has been meeting with Physics, Biology and Chemistry to design the new ISA building • SKANSKA will be constructing the building • The building is still funded but likely to fall behind schedule given recent economic challenges in the State IDRB • Discussions are still ongoing between SNSM and other units on campus to finish the space in IDRB for use by research clusters

Facilities, Safety, and Security • Hurricane preparedness • Emergency generators are being tested on the first Friday of each month • SOC’s new roof is slated for completion in early April • Building Maintenance • A new cold water plant will go online this summer. This building will improve AC service to CAS buildings: BEH, CPR, FAO and SOC

16. Facilities, Safety, and Security • Physical Departmental Moves • Rehab & Mental Health Counseling will move to FMHI beginning this summer • Criminology will move to FMHI -- date to be determined

Budget/HR State of Florida Outlook for 2009/10 • Weakness in the state, national and world economies has deepened • $4 billion gap between 2009/10 revenue and current year (2008/09) expenditures • Gap must be addressed with further budget reductions unless additional revenue streams and/or federal stimulus funds are identified • Fourth consecutive year of declining revenues

19. Budget/HR Florida Senate – Proposed Higher Education Appropriations Bill (released March 27, 2009) • Graduate tuition may be increased up to 15% per year (NOTE: current statute limits the increase to 10%) • Undergraduate base tuition increase of 8% (Governor’s recommendation was 5%) • Differential Fee bill provides authority for USF to increase UG tuition up to maximum of 15% per year

Budget/HR 2008/09 CAS Budget Highlights • 168K faculty base salary increases were awarded for research and scholarly excellence • 2% competitive base pay increase was given to faculty • 0.4% merit increase for faculty • 2.1M (1xonly) for fall/spring instructional costs (visiting faculty and adjuncts) • 2.75M (1xonly) for summer 2009 • CAS continues to move forward with faculty searches
