CHRIST’S DIVIDING SWORD “Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and d daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law” (Matt. 10:34-35).
Luke 12:51-53 • Jesus came to kindle a fire – Most of us prefer peace at any cost. • Jesus came to be baptized in suffering – We avoid pain in any way. Jesus suffered among the ungrateful. • Jesus came to divide households – We avoid and reprimand anyone who causes trouble at home. • Commitment to Him come at a price.
Note the Warnings in Luke 12 • Beware of Hypocrisy – vs. 1-12 • Beware of covetousness – vs. 13-21 • Beware of worrying – vs. 22-34 • Beware of carelessness – vs. 35-53 • Beware of spiritual dullness – vs. 54-59
Division Comes… • But what harmony to those who know, understand and love Jesus!! • Division isn’t His primary desire. • It follows when we reject His simple truth.
