  1. Poll Everywhere An Adventure in Introduction to Human Nutrition

  2. Class Description • 120 students-all undergraduates • Pre-requisites: Biol 101, Biol 101L, Chem 101, Chem 101L, Chem 102, 102L • Students are sophomores, juniors and seniors • The vast majority will not be Nutrition majors • Most are just interested in nutrition in general

Instructor Description • Professor in Nutrition Department in the Gillings School of Global Public Health • I teach this course, and occasionally a graduate level course • Most of my time is spent on research • I took over this course 3 years ago when the former teacher retired • Went to CFE to get help in improving this course

OLD vs NEW • OLD: Standard 50 minute lectures 3X a week • NEW: Lecture 2X a week and Discussion Sections once a week • Discussion sections are taught in groups of 20 students with a grad student or research track faculty leading-”ripped from the headlines” nutrition studies are discussed • OLD: No polling • NEW: Poll Everywhere

Poll Everywhere-Trial and Tribulations • Learned about it from CFE and hearing Kelly Hogan speak about it • Decided to give it try when re-doing Nutr 240 • Poll Everywhere is an in-class response system in which students can use their own phones or laptops to respond (they don’t have to buy a clicker) • Never had a student not have a cell phone or laptop-so this was not an issue

  6. Initial Problem • Lecture Hall where this class is taught had absolutely no cell phone reception • Solution: Had to move this class to another building on campus • Problem- This building was Bioinformatics, a “long way” from central campus • Students bitterly complained every year about the distance

  8. Poll Everywhere experiences • This year-finally back in Rosenau (SPH) due to increased cell phone coverage and ability to use smartphones and laptops • Tested to make sure all students could get on before moving class back to this building.

  9. How do I use it? • As opposed to clickers, you can ask open-ended questions • Lets give it a try

How do I use Poll Everywhere during a class? • I ask students questions ahead of the lecture to see what their general understanding is • I ask common myth questions to challenge what they think they know • True or False: The sugar in coca-cola is different from the sugar found in grapes • True or False: Type 2 diabetes can be prevented by eating foods low in sugar • I ask questions right after a tough concept to see if they understood it • I ask questions prior to an exam to let them know what their general understanding is

  12. Fundamentals • I have the students register prior to the start of the course-name and PID so I can identify them when they respond • I tell them that I’m keeping track of responses-but usually I don’t • I don’t use polls during every lecture. And I tell them at the beginning of the class if they need to have their phone/laptop ready.
