ASCE Strategic Planning It’s an ongoing process, not a plan
Identify the important issues facing civil engineering • These issues become the “Radar Screen” • A priority listing of the top 15 issues that: • Will have the greatest impact on the profession; • ASCE can do something about.
Example of Strategic Issue • Years of deferred infrastructure investment and maintenance, and the profession’s limited effectiveness in communicating with public officials regarding infrastructure needs: • a) Place public safety at risk. • b) Hinder the nation’s economic growth and competitiveness.
Identify the important issues facing civil engineering • Which of these are most important for us to deal with now? Prioritize these issues
Identify the important issues facing civil engineering • An “outcome” is a definition of what success looks like Prioritize these issues Determine outcomes for the top priority issues
Identify the important issues facing civil engineering • An “Action Item” is a definable task or activity that helps us achieve the desired outcome Prioritize these issues Determine outcomes for the top priority issues Create action items that get us to the outcomes

Strategy Sketch • A concise summary of the key elements to a top-priority strategic issue, including: • Strategic issue • Desired Outcomes (targets) • Actions • Guiding Principles (parameters)
It’s an ongoing process . . . • Each year the Board reconsiders the civil engineering and ASCE environment and: • May add and delete strategic issues • May reprioritize the issues • Reviews the actions being taken on last year’s prioritized issues • May initiate new actions
