Pre-Presentation Jitters(or Full-Blown Stage Fright) • Nervous energy can be a good thing • Don’t push your luck • Avoid coffee, tea, chocolate, and mood-altering chemicals • Honour thyself – acknowledge your nerves but also acknowledge your ability
Jitters? - About the Audience The audience as individuals, not mob The audience is benevolent (if there’s anyone in the audience that looks like this - run!) Debunking the naked audience myth
Jitters? - 2 Coping Strategies • Emotion-Focused Coping • Problem-Solving Coping
Jitters? - Problem-Solving Coping • Address your cognitions • Go ahead, imagine the WORST • Self-talk “I’m really bad at this” or “This is going to be FUN!” • Develop your skills • Volunteer to do presentations • Toastmasters • Practice, read about it, watch other good speakers
Jitters? - Emotion-Focused Coping • Honour thyself – check in (acknowledge, accept, adjust) • Coping techniques that take a while to develop • Pairing a word with relaxation • Coping techniques that you can use now • Breathing, visualization, affirmations • “Alert mind, calm body”
In the First Few Minutes • Breathe • Watch the audience come • Honour thyself – check in • Be considerate of your audience • Physical placement
Cont’d… In the First Few Minutes • Engage and be engaging • Deaf lady in the back row • Policy on interrupting for questions or concerns • Involve the audience right off the bat • If interaction is appropriate for your presentation, start now
In the Body of Your Presentation(General Performance Tips) • It’s OK to be nervous but stay focussed on your material • Be a clock watcher • Engage and be engaging • Debunking body language • Hands • To pace or not to pace? • Eye contact • Lectern or Podium • Sense of humour – don’t lose it • In the end, we’re just communicating – not performing
Concluding Your Presentation • Be a clock watcher • Respect the audience’s time • Insist on your time being respected too • Tell ‘em what you told ‘em
Q’s and A’s • Be a clock watcher • Repeat the question • Answer to the point • If you don’t know, don’t fake it
After All is Said and Done • Debrief • Wind down (water, walk – avoid alcohol) • Take notes on presentation afterwards • Add it to your growing list of skills and see if you can use it in a resume or CV
