The Internet: The network of networks Lesson 7 What You Will Learn • The internet and it’s popularity • Differences between the internet and other online services • Differences between client software and server software • The most popular internet services and their functions • Differences between internet addresses and domain names • The use of internet-based networks within large organizations
What is the Internet? • A global, interconnected, computernetwork in which every computer connected to it can exchange data with any other connectedcomputer • Immediate and direct contact with all computers on the network • Consists of many private and public networks linked together to provide a worldwide networking system • Uses packet-switching technology to transmit data
Why is the Internet popular? • Information, Information, Information • Ease of use- Click and go • Multimedia- Music, Videos, Pictures • Convenient- Why go to the store? • Cheap- Where else can you go for $1.00 a dayto get entertainment, to learn, or to shop
Summary: What is the Internet? • The Internet is the transport vehicle for the information stored in files or documents on another computer. • It is sometimes compared to a giant international plumbing system. • The Internet itself does not contain information. • It is a slight misstatement to say a "document was found on the Internet." • It would be more correct to say it was found through or using the Internet.
What’s the difference between internet service providers (ISP) and online services? • An online service is proprietary, that is, it provides services through their network; Examples: e-mail, chat rooms, customized content, and Internet access Fall of 2006
What’s a Portal? • ISP’s provide a portal (gateway) to connect to the Internet without offering many other services
What’s the difference between client and server software? • The client or user’s computer has a special software program called a web browser • The server, a computer which can be located anywhere in the world, communicates with the user’s computer by way of standardized rules or protocols (TCP/IP) • Data is sent and retrieved between the client and server computers Internet Explorer Netscape Navigator
Exploring Internet Services
E-Mail • E-Mail is short for electronic mail • Most popular of the Internet services • Messages sent and received in a few seconds • Attachments such as photos, music and any document may be sent with the message
World Wide Web (WWW) • WWW is a part of the Internet that contain websites which consist of web pages • Every web page has its own URL (Uniform Resource Locator) or address • Web pages are documents written using a markup language called Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) • Hyperlinks are pictures, words and icons that connect the client computer to a web page
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) • A part of the Internet that enables client computers to transfer files • Transferring files from an FTP site to the client is known as downloading • Transferring files from the client to the FTP site is known as uploading • Clients may store files to an FTP site’s server Your Computer FTP Server DOWNLOAD UPLOAD
Usenet • A part of the Internet which enables users to participate in discussion and newsgroups • Usenet newsgroups are organized into hierarchies (categories) and subcategories • Subcategories include Standard, Alt, Biz and Local newsgroups
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) • Real-time, text-based conversations • Chat groups are divided into channels that cover a specific topic
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) • IRC is the net's equivalent of CB radio. Internet Relay Chat lets people all over the world participate in real-time conversations. IRC is where the Net comes alive! Ham Radio CB Radio
Instant Messaging • Instant messaging systems let a user know when a friend or business associate is online • Real-time, text based conversations
What’s the Difference Between IRC and IM? • Instant messaging systems you have to know the username of the person you are contacting. • Internet Relay Chat you browse channels and categories. • Chat rooms are similar to IRC but are becoming unpopular due to IM
Internet Telephony • Real-time voice and video conversations • Requires microphone, sound card and digital video camera for videoconferencing
How the Internet Works
What is needed to connect to the Internet? • A computer with an operating system that supports Internet protocols; Windows, MAC OS, UNIX • Communications equipment such as a modem, ISDN adapter or Ethernet card • An Internet service provider (ISP) • Web browser software such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator
How does data travel on the Internet? Click to view animation. Click onlyonce 4. Your request goes to anational backbone network 3. Your request goes to anetwork access point(NAP) 1. You request a web page 5. Your request reaches the website’s server and the web page is sent back to you in packets 2. Your request goes to your ISP’spoint of presence(POP) YOU ARE HERE
What is TCP/IP? • Transmission control protocol(TCP)- A standard that defines how one computer can communicate and exchange data with another computer on the Internet • Internet protocol (IP)- Defines the Internet’s addressing scheme • IP address- Each computer connected to the Internet is given an address composed of numbers and periods; Example: 209.234.456.8
What is a domain name? • Domain Name System (DNS)- Enable users to type names of websites and web pages as well as IP addresses; Example: www.hsnqp.com or 112.23.345.56 • Domain name registration- Enable individuals, businesses and organizations to register their websites with InterNIC • The last part of the domain name gives the type of organization that maintains the site; Examples: .com, .net, .edu and .gov Domain Name
What are intranets and extranets? • Intranet- Internal networking system within a company • Functions like the Internet • For internal use only; Not available to those outside the company • Firewall- Software used to screen incoming data • Extranet- Intranets that permit using the intranet by outside sources
