  1. Secured Windows 7 Web server (IIS) Stephen Riddle (EKU, Dept. of Technology, NET program) Presented by: Stephen Riddle

  2. OUTLINE • Introduction of the Project • Body • Building of Web Server PC • Components • Implementation of Untangle • External Security • Explanation of IIS • Conclusion

  3. MOTIVATION • Felt the need for more server experience. • Friend is in need of a place to re-home his websites. • Security and Servers are in my intended career path

  4. INTRODUCTION • There is a need for a web server to host multiple web sites on. • Many sources explained different ways to set up IIS in Windows 7. • Essentials for problem solving • What exactly was being re-home on the server • Could server communicate through a Linux based security setup.

  5. Introduction Cont. • I did research on multiple topics for this project, including: • Windows 7 IIS capabilities • Managing IIS and web sites • Building Web Pages using Adobe products • Compatibility of DD-WRT • Untangle Implementation • PC construction

  6. PROBLEM STATEMENT • Friends, and myself looking for a place to home and re-home websites. • Sub-Problem: Security concerns to protect sensitive information.

  7. Assumptions • I will be setting up this network on campus. This may hamper the ability to have the intended security working properly. • Test conditions will be a simulation of a local web page, and a web page donated to me by my friend working on the web server.

  8. PROPOSED SOLUTION • List steps taken to solve the problem such as but not limited to: • Starting with an idea of using Windows 7 with a dual partition on the hard drive with a Linux based web server. • Changed initial idea to having a dual partition with Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. • Finalized an idea of using Windows 7 and it’s internal IIS.

  9. Solution Cont. • The final solution involved me building a PC to use as a web server. It allowed me to know exactly what was going into the project. • Software Involved in the project: • Windows 7 Home Premium • Linux Untangle • Multiple Drivers for Hardware • Adobe CS 5 Master Edition • Windows Movie Maker • CamStudio

  10. Solution Cont. • Hardware Involved in the project: • Xclio Super Tower Case Full ATX • ASUS P8z 68-V LE Motherboard • Intel Core i3-2100 LGA 1155 Processor • 2x4 GB G-Skill RAM • Rosewill CAPSTONE 650W 80PLUS Gold PS • ASUS GeForce GT 430 Graphics Card • 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green Hard Drive • ASUS 20” Monitor • Logitech Keyboard/Mouse • Netgear Router and Switch

  11. Solution Cont. • Assembly • Assembly involved computer construction, and network infrastructure • Testing and troubleshooting • Tested computer upon completion • Computer failed to start at first, but was easily fixed • Set security up on router, and in Untangle • Network worked without Issue • Built a sample webpage, and obtained one from friend for re-homing testing • Many problems occurred with hosting at first, solved though many tutorials and learning how IIS worked. • Can access public hosted webpage though security.

  12. RESULTS • Results: • Computer was built and functioning • Web server was installed/configured • Ability to access web page though security.

  15. CONCLUSIONS • Significance of project: • Shows ability to troubleshoot and maintain computers and networks with security. • Gained valuable knowledge of servers in general. • Allowed me to gain and use knowledge learned to put a project into place. I can use everything I learned in a future workplace

  16. FUTURE WORK • Additions: • Use of DD-WRT(Strengthened security) • Involved more server roles, such as RADIUS, AD, or DNS • Email: Stephendriddle@yahoo.com
