Declaration of independence In 1776 a group of colonists wrote the Declaration of independence to tell the world why the colonists wanted independence.
Taxes • The British had won the French Indian war, but the war had cost a great deal of money. The British government decided to pass taxes on American colonists to help repay the money
Native Americans and the British • Most Native Americans supported the British in the war. They resented the colonists ,who were moving west and taking there land. When the British commander Henry Hamilton came to Detroit in 1775 to launch raids into colonial areas and Native Americans joined him.
The land Ordinances of 1785 • The land of Ordinances of 1785 called for measuring and mapping territory sold or lost by the Native Americans.
The Northwest Territory • Michigan was a part of the Northwest territory. Settlers rushed into the area to claim land . To govern this territory the new congress passed two laws, or ordinances
The Northwest Ordinance • the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 was a plan for creating states out of the territory. The plan said that state could be formed as soon as an area had a population 60,000
Michigan territory • Shawnee chief Tecumseh tried to protect Native American land . At a meeting with territorial governor and future President.
Tecumseh • Tecumseh wanted to organize Native Americans to fight back. He traveled great distances to visit many groups. He told them they could protect their land.
