Teaching Discipline • How does technology today affect writers and the literature of today? ?
Question 1 • Ms. Louisa May Alcott, as a popular writer, do you think that the technology we have available today makes it easier to be a writer?
Answer • Alcott: In some ways, it definitely makes it easier to be a writer. So much information is available to writers today and can be obtained quickly. Many of my own stories were based on my own experiences because I was limited in my knowledge of other topics. For example, Little Womenwas based on my childhood growing up with my sisters. Writers today have the opportunity to write about whatever they want. Computers and the Internet allow writers to research whatever topics they want and provide them with enough information to create any story.
Question 2 • Do you feel that technology today limits writers in any way?
Answer • Alcott: For the most part, I believe that technology today has more of a positive impact on writers rather than a negative impact. However, as much as technology provides a variety of creative approaches for writers, it may limit their creative thinking in terms of thinking for themselves. Technology presents writers with a huge amount of opinions and advice that could possibly hold back a writer in expressing his/her own thoughts.
Question 3 • Imagine that you could only use ONE of the following technologies: a computer, a telephone, or the Internet. Which one would you use and why?
Answer • Alcott: I would choose the computer. I enjoyed writing my stories by hand, but having the organization that a computer offers would be very helpful. It would also be easier to edit my stories. It would be a great time saver! Click on the photo to see a preview of the new film about Louisa May Alcott.
