584.65 A decimal takes a fractions place. It is located to the right of the units place. The decimal is represented with a dot called the decimal point.
89.874 To separate whole numbers from the decimal you put a dot called the decimal point. The place you put the decimal point is to the right of the units. There are a lot of decimals but the three basic ones are the tenths, the hundredths and the thousandths. It can keep going all the way to millionths though.
10.874 Beware that the decimal point is aligned. 10.857 First you stack the numbers up – make sure your numbers and decimal point are lined up. Next you start comparing from the far left – the largest place value. You keep comparing (each time going 1 place value to the right) until you get to a difference. There you see witch number is bigger. The number with the bigger number is the greatest.
11.8o 11.81 But there is a special case though. If one of the numbers has one place value less you just imagine that there's a zero in it’s place.(Continued from last slide)
First lets learn how to convert decimals to fractions. If your decimal is just tenths and nothing else your denominator is 10 and your numerator is the number of tenths. The reason why you need to know this is because you’ll need either just decimals or just fractions to compare.
1.4 4/10 4/10 5/10 bigger Next to compare you just see which fraction is bigger and which one is smaller. Then you can pick which answer you were looking for.(Continued from last slide)
