SITUATION Currentsituation ACTUAL/ FLOODS – HEAVY RAINS Report OCHA 10 jan 2012: 2,1 million people affected by rains. 38,000 people have evacuated their homes. BRAZIL: The current rainy season, which began in October 2011, is worsening. Brazilian authorities estimate that 2.1 million people have been affected, mostly in the states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. Some 38,000 people have fled their homes, 13 have died and 103 municipalities are under a state of emergency. Authorities in the state of Rio de Janeiro ordered 4,000 people in the town of TresBandas to evacuate after a water contention dam flooded the community. Similar floods in January 2011 left 900 people dead in the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro. At that time it was estimated that 2.6 per cent of the Brazilian population (5million people) lives in high risk areas.
