What is Silver Silver (Ag) is a solid metallic element on the Periodic Table. It is atomic #47 located blocks 11,5. It is a precious metal that is used for jewelry. It is also used to make coins and silverware such as forks and spoons. The color “silver” came from the metal’s color. It is, like all metals, found from the ground and has to be dug out from Earth.
History of Silver Silver has been used for thousands of years. It was traded and an important part of the economy of many countries. It has been used in jewelry and in coins like today. It was a precious metal since it was discovered. Today, silver costs $49 per troy ounce or 31 grams.
In which Compounds? Silver can be found in many compounds. Silver nitrate (AgNO3) is a compound mixed with silver and nitric acid which can be used in antiseptic. Silver Chloride (AgCI), and Silver Sulfide are other compounds. Silver oxide (Ag2O) is produced from silver nitrate and silver oxide can be used in watch batteries.
Characteristics • Silver is shiny and metallic. • It has the highest electrical conductivity of all metals. • It has a melting point of 962C (1,763F) and a boiling point of 2162C (3924F). • Silver is harder and denser than gold.
Effects on Nature Silver is a non toxic metal, but silver salts can be toxic. It leads to agraria, a rare, mild but permanent sickness. If silver salts are eaten, it can be deadly and poisonous.
Places to find Silver Some countries have mines that lead to silver underground. Countries with silver mines are: Peru, Bolivia, Mexico, China, Australia, Chile, Poland and Serbia. These countries have found tons of silver in their mines.
