  2. Focus on the Curriculum Encouraging students to be engaged and effective learners • How can we encourage this transition? • What activities in the first six weeks will aid students in their transition?

  3. Success comes when students • are intellectually engaged and • have a sense of social belonging and well being • founded on positive experiences

  4. Aim for students by the end of the first 6 weeks To have • acquired a sense of the enquiry which drives the disciplines in which they are enrolled and have experienced an engaging intellectual experience, e.ga stimulating lecture in their discipline area/s • experienced active learning experiences • been introduced to the academic skills required in their areas of study e.g. those required for assessment including understanding marking standards; academic honesty, referencing, writing genres such as essays or reports, and other areas of academic literacy

  5. developed a sense of belonging at the university through involvement and recognition e.g. in a small group tutorial • begun to develop and appreciate the aims, pathways and opportunities of the program of study in which they are enrolled

  6. This session • Students talk about the transition to university • Table discussion about strategies for first 6 weeks • Presentations on 5 faculty and other initiatives • Table discussion about adopting or adapting these strategies • Student panel – comments and questions
