  4. Probation Requirements( 3 years) • Competence in: • Research • Teaching • Management

  5. Probation Process Interview Contract Attend T&L days and complete written work Satisfy Research & Management Requirements + Pass Probation

  6. Strands of the Teaching and Learning Programme • For new lecturers • For contract research staff • For postgraduates (PGs) who teach

  7. CENTRAL Teaching Learning Assessment Course Design DEPARTMENT Mentor support Observation of individual + feedback Subject specific training for PGs Programme for PGs

  8. Issues in PG Work • Bristol University as a ‘research’ university • Some staff do not value/enjoy teaching • Lack of time (or perceived lack) • No specific person in faculties/depts responsible for PGs • No system for ensuring that PGs who teach are qualified

  9. Ways Forward (1) • More links between the ‘central’ staff and the person in each department who is responsible for overseeing PG teaching • Notes from discussion of PG observation sent to T&L staff

  10. Ways Forward (2) • Mentor training for staff • T&L staff to give support in leading departmental training for PGs • Encourage PGs who later become permanent lecturers to become mentors • Build a data base of lecturers who show strong commitment to T&L (to mentor other PGs )
