    1. John Deere ALLI-GATOR DCPD Project April 26, 2004 Adam Krolikowski Adam Yantis Dan Delman Jacqueline Woo

    2. Introduction Objective Gator Comparison Technical Issues Design Details Conclusion Recommendations

    3. Objective Convert an existing John Deere Gator into an amphibious vehicle Maintain full land functionality, while adding the versatility of deep water use

    4. Final Design

    5. Gator Comparison Chose 4x2 b/c cheaper, less starting weight, and less dragChose 4x2 b/c cheaper, less starting weight, and less drag

    6. Gator Comparison Drag is reduced because the chassis is 10” shorter than the Standard 6x4 Gator A Mid Axle will be added to help with flotation and propulsion The 4x2 engine will be replaced with a stronger 18HP engine The 4x2 steel cargo bed will be replaced with plastic cargo bed Talk about overall starting point for designTalk about overall starting point for design

    7. Technical Issues

    8. Technical Issues Methods Plastic shell Epoxy (typical Marine) Plastic to Plastic Plastic to Metal Lip Seal

    9. Technical Issues Need lip seal & epoxyNeed lip seal & epoxy

    10. Technical Issues

    11. Design Details Choosing the Tires A spreadsheet was completed including the following aspects Tire Brand Width Height Rim Volume Weight Weight to volume ratio

    12. Design Details

    13. Design Details Flotation Analysis

    14. Design Details Flotation Analysis

    15. Design Details Flotation Analysis – Waterline

    16. Design Details

    17. Finite Element Analysis

    18. Front Impact FEA

    19. Front Impact

    20. Combination Load FEA

    21. Design Compromises No Doors – More difficult to access vehicle Lower Cargo Load Lighter Frame – can’t take extreme loading like the open box steel frame

    22. Conclusion 4x2 is initially lower cost, lower drag, lower weight Added Axle and 2 extra driven wheels Lighter Cargo Bed (approx. 30 lbs lighter) Lighter Frame ( Water Resistant Larger Tires Chassis floats 9 inches fully loaded Tires submerged 70% Estimated 1.86 mph in water Pass FEAs with safety factor of 2 or greater

    23. Recommendations Determine a way to seal front axle so vehicle can be all wheel drive Focus on internal features (placement of subsystems)
