  1. 7th EC Conference SAFEGUARDED CULTURAL HERITAGE Prague 31 May -3 June 2006 • SESSION VI • COORDINATION OF NATIONAL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION Cristina Sabbioni National Research Council (CNR), Italy

  2. SESSION VI Based on: 8 oral presentations: 7 from Member States and 1 from China Dealing with: - COORDINATION OF NATIONAL RESEARCH - EDUCATION

  3. COORDINATION OF NATIONAL RESEARCH • National Research Programme (duration 4 year) • International collaboration is promoted by COST Actions • Both and COST action implement a multidisciplinary approach • Funding : COST coordination and workshop • NRP research project

  4. Are Research National Programmes focused on local problem ? - Fundamental knowledge on materials - Impact of the environment - Weathering processes - Advanced diagnosis - Conservation-restoration ……………… Challenges Subsidiarity: Member States must include Cultural Heritage into National Research Programme Coordination: DG Research must coordinate RNP in Europe

  5. EDUCATION • Wide range of professionals are working on the conservation and protection of an enormous diversity of cultural heritage • Traditional skills and technologies under threat in Europe • Need to establish mechanism to transfer technological developments from research • Recognition of an interdisciplinary future for conservation research and applications • Research is a prerequisite for education: deep concern over a reduction in scientific research funding under FP7

  6. Need to establish mechanism to transfer technological developments from research into education • Research results eg. Laser Technology and Computerised X-Ray Tomography, are not finding a place in education courses • Education courses are not responding to new tools and technologies from research • Because there is lack of training in the use of new technologies by conservator-restorers, as end-users they are not creating the demand for new tools from SMEs • This lack of demand could discourage SMEs from contributing to future research under 7FP MAIN CHALLENGE DG Research must ensure that products of research are transferred and re-engineered for use by education and training courses

  7. “……..all things in the world are integrated and connected to each other……………..” 7FP The role of EC Directorate Environment is to promote the Research on Cultural Heritage in an integrated way and well connected with education
