Background :DuringFebruary 2013 whilst doing research, we came across the ‘Finding Heroes – librarians who dare to do different’ webpage.One of the stories focussed on how Christchurch City Council relocated and rebuilt library facilities after the 2011 February earthquakes.Staff used new technology, such as Google Streetview virtual tours in a number of their libraries – e.g. Christchurch South, Riccarton and Tuam Central Library. Timeline : March 8 - The Library MSSG met and identified the virtual tour as a tool that could be used to highlight Māori Collections at Mt Albert and Waitakere Libraries, provide 24/7 virtual visual access and other advantages which will be mentioned.Early March – Google Photographer emailed re: quote for 2 library tours. Building specifications and floor details supplied.Google Streetview quote received. A proposal was written by the MSSG to align to Unitec’s Virtual Marae Teaching and Learning goals.March 28 - The Library Google Streetview Virtual Tour project was submitted to the Virtual Marae Advisory Group to seek funding for implementing the tours.   8. Timeline :Early in May the Library Director was informed that the proposal for the virtual tour had been successful.The Google photographer was notified. Dates for the two library ‘shoots’ were scheduled to begin during mid-semester break.Mt Albert library was photographed on the 8th July, and the Waitakere Library ‘shoot’ was completed the following day.‘Sneakpeaks’ were sent by the photographer and previewed by the MSSG group a week later. Both virtual tours were completed within two weeks. Māori Success Strategy Group

August 13th, 2013The Launch of the Google streetview virtual library tours of Mt Albert and Waitakere Libraries, were presented to library staff in the Mt Albert Library training room Josie Keelan attended as Co-ordinator of the Virtual Marae Advisory Group.Google Streetview tours went ‘live’ on the Library Webpage, The NEST and USU web page.Unitec Libraries became the first tertiary libraries in New Zealand, to have virtual tours.
