  1. The Priority of Grace In the Kingdom Luke 15:11 - 32

  2. Sermon Design • Context • Jesus priming for the right response • Introduction of the parable • Offences of the younger son • Offences of the older son • Conclusion • Application

  3. Context Luke 14:25–35, Jesus Teaches about the Cost of Being a Disciple If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple….In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”

  4. Context Luke 15:1–2 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

  5. Priming for the right respond • Parable of the Lost Sheep - Rural setting • Parable of the Lost Coin - Urban setting I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. (7) In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (10)

  6. The Right Response I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. (7) In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (10) Rejoice!

  7. Introduction of the Parable Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ • Share of the estate – one third of the father’s total wealth. • the younger son clearly wants to sever his relationship with his father and go away.

  8. Introduction of the Parable So he divided his property between them • Greek: Bios • Translates as Livelihood (NKJV)

  9. The Trail of Tears

  10. The Trail of Tears

  11. Civil Displacement

  12. Younger Son’s Offenses Father’s Responses Waited for him to come home. He ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. Restored the younger son’s status by giving him the robe, ring and sandals. Killed a fattened calf and threw him a huge party. • Ask for his inheritance. • Implicitly dishonoured his father. • Humiliated his father privately. • Immoral living. • Squandered all his wealth.

  13. Reason to Celebrate For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate. (verse 24)

  14. Rationale If someone has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.” Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid. (Deuteronomy 21:18 – 21)

  15. Grace to the younger son • By Law, the younger son could be stoned to death but the father did not report him and waited for him to repent instead. • The father pardoned the younger son before his repentance.

  16. Older Son’s Offenses Father’s Responses Pleaded with him. Assured the son of his position. Assured his love for his son. Assured his son of his possessions. Reminded him of his relationship with his brother. Pointed him towards forgiveness and grace. • Refused to join the celebration. • Humiliated his father publically.. • Did not acknowledge the father. • Compliant with the wrong motivation. • Accusing the father of injustice. • Implicitly dishonoured his father.

  17. Grace to the older son • Assured the son of his position and possessions. • Assured his love towards the older son. • The father forgive the older son before his rebellion.

  18. Conclusion • The father reaches out to both sons. • Repentance is needed by both sons.

  19. Application Kingdom of God • In your heart • JoyvsAnger • In community • RestorationvsAlienation
