The Odd Stack 3 Deep / 2 Deep Zone with Man to Man Underneath
Special Coverages vs Spread Attacks • 3 Jump • SLIDE Package • KING Package • We will usually play our 2/3 deep look against teams that use Spread formations.
What is a Spread formation? We consider these to be Spread formations: • Any set with 1 or fewer RBs and no TEs • Any set from shotgun with no TEs
3 JUMP Coverage • CBs & FS are free to the football • $PUR / BANDIT align splitting #1 & #2 • SAM / WILL align splitting Center & #2 • MIKE will either pressure or cover RB • At the snap: $ and B jump #1 man to man, SLB and WLB jump #2 man to man • Vs Trips, LBs FLIP over • Weak Spot – if MIKE is blitzing, RB is open
Pressure Up Front • To get pressure with only 3 down linemen in 3 JUMP, we use two line stunts • TEXAS tells the callside DE to crash down into A gap, while the NG whips around & outside • OKLAHOMA tells the NG to crash outside thru B gap, while the callside DE whips around and shoots A gap
TEXAS LEFT In 3 JUMP, backside DE loops outside DE goes first
OKLAHOMA RIGHT In 3 JUMP, the backside DE loops outside NG goes first
SLIDE Package • We run our SLIDE Package against Spread offenses and in obvious passing downs • SLIDE commits 6 men to the box & 5 to the secondary • Vs 1 back & empty sets, both outside linebackers ($ & B) will be secondary-pass first players • Vs 2 backs, the BANDIT will come back into the box and he and the MIKE will be 30 technique LBs • The two inside LBs (SAM & WILL) will become edge rushers with no disguise .. “2 best athletes principle” • In SLIDE, we will usually be in READ coverage which ends up being a 2 deep or a 3 deep with man underneath, depending on the formations & routes
READ Coverage vs a one back set w/ Doubles • CBs align 7 x 1 off #1 with eyes on #2 • If #2 threatens the flats, the CB jumps him; otherwise, the CB has #1 • OLBs align 12 yds deep over #2 with eyes on # 2 • If #2 threatens flats, OLBs jump #1; otherwise they have #2 • FS aligns 12yds deep in the middle of the field and is free to the ball
READ Coverage vs One back w/ Trips • CB to Trips aligns 7 x 1 on #1; man up on anything that threatens him vertically (Fade, Fly, Flag) • OLB to the Trips aligns head up on #2; collision #2 at the snap then cover flats • FS aligns 12 yds deep on #3; man up on anything that threatens him vertically (Post, Seam, Fly by #3) • OLB away from Trips aligns 12 yds deep on the hash; at the snap he checks #1 to his side, then looks for any crossing from the Trips side • CB to the one receiver side, Press man on #1
SLIDE PRESSURES • SLIDE PINCH • SLIDE PINCH OKLAHOMA Rt / Lft • SLIDE PINCH TEXAS Rt / Lft • SLIDE DBL RAZOR • SLIDE OKLAHOMA RAZOR Combo
SLIDE PINCH Edge Rushers aim for opposite back Secondary helps late on option
KING Package • We run our KING package when we are definitely looking to stop the pass • KING commits 6 to the secondary & 5 in the box • KING Coverage is always 2 deep w/ man under • We will substitute one DB for one of our ILBs; the better cover ILB stays on the field • The new DB is called the DIME back
KING vs Doubles WILL has man to man on the RB All man coverage is played with inside leverage
KING vs Trips WILL has RB man to man BANDIT flips over on #3
KING Pressures • With only 4 defenders in the box, we must find a way to pressure the offense, especially against a mobile QB • KING MIKE X • KING TEXAS Rt / Lft • KING OKLAHOMA Rt / Lft • KING TIGER • KING TIGER SHOOT • TIGER is our two down lineman look. We tell the NG to stand up and align in a 30 technique
KING MIKE X WILL aligns where he can best cover his man and not interfere in the pressure
