Jacobo Arbenz Was the leader of Guatemala however on April 7, 1954 he was overthrown from power. Arbenz was overthrown from power when he began importing Soviet weapons and in response the United States sent Honduras weapons which allowed them to take down Arbenz. Fidel Castro On April 7, 1959 Fidel Castro overthrew Fulgecio Batista in Cuba and became the leader of Cuba. Even though the Untied States recognized Castro as the new leader of Cuba he criticized them and established a relationship with the Soviet Union. Linked citation goes here Return to Exhibit

Cuban Missile Crisis Beginning on October 14, 1962 there was a 13 day confrontation with the Soviet Union and Cuba on one side and the United States on the other. Kennedy Orders A Blockade When the Cuban Missile Crisis began the United States considered attacking Cuba via air or sea, however for legal reasons it was not called a blockade instead it was called a “quarantine”. Linked citation goes here Return to Exhibit

Eisenhower Doctrine A speech given on January 5, 1957 by the United States president Eisenhower stating that if any Middle East country was in need of assistance the US would help. Aden Emergency Was a movement against British forces, that began with the throwing of a grenade at the Aden airport at a group of British officials. Soviets invade Afghanistan On January 1, 1979 Soviets invade Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. Even though the prime minister of Kabul tried to keep the Muslim tradition it was short lived because in December he was shot by the Russians and replaced with Babrak Kamal. The Six Day War This six day war began on June 5, 1967after a high tension between Israel and the countries around it. Which includes Egypt, Jordan and Syria the ending result is Israel winning the war and taking land from the opposing countries. Linked citation goes here Return to Exhibit
Afghanistan Proxy War On December 24, 1979 a civil war broke out in Afghanistan, the Soviets controlled the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan who were fighting against the Afghan rebels. Suez Canal War On October 29, 1956 Egypt blocked off the Suez Canal from anyone coming through. Due to this happening Britain, France, the United States and Israel sent troops to regain control over the canal but the UN got them to withdraw allowing Egypt to control of the Suez Canal. Iranian Revolution Starting on January 16, 1979 Iranian militarists seize the US embassy and hold hostages in order to have the shah returned to Iran. After his death in Egypt, a negotiation is made so that the hostages are freed on January 20, 1981. Linked citation goes here Return to Exhibit
