Theme 4: Human interactions with the Environment J. J. Agar, Ph.D. Southeast Fisheries Science Center NOAA Fisheries
Foci of Human interactions • Climate change and variability • Sustainable use of fisheries
Outline • Needs and issues • Describe current partnerships • Discuss future research initiatives
SEFSC Goals • Protect, restore and manage the use of coastal and ocean resources through ecosystem approaches. • Protect and restore threatened and endangered species and their habitats. • Rebuild and maintain sustainable fisheries.
SEFSC Social Science Group • Jim Waters (Acting leader, Beaufort) • Juan Agar (Miami) • David Carter (Miami) • Brent Stoffel (Miami, May 2003) • Vacant • Vacant
Partnerships Multilateral collaborations (VIMS, Sea Grant, UPR) • Cost and Earnings Survey of Trap Fisheries Post-doctoral opportunities • Recreational Fisheries Valuation • MPA/Ecosystem Bioeconomic Models
Cost and Earnings Survey of the US Caribbean Trap Fishery The socio-economic impacts of instituting a limited entry program in the trap fishery in the US Caribbean (Puerto Rico and USVI).
Valuation of Recreational Fisheries Species-specific valuation of recreational fishing in the Gulf of Mexico
MPA Bioeconomic Modeling MPA development for the Snapper-grouper fishery off the coast of the southern US Atlantic States
Future Research Directions • Bioeconomic modeling (commercial and recreational sectors) • Non-market valuation (recreational sector and protected resources) • Anthropological/sociological (fishermen and community characterization) • Special needs: Trade and environment, global change, etc.
Concluding Remarks • CIMAS is an important component of the SEFSC strategy to our strengthen socio-economic capacity. • Cooperation will likely to increase as the Socio-economic Group grows and projects become more interdisciplinary in nature
