John 1:29-39 • John 1:29-39 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.' 31 I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel." 32 And John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' 34 And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God." 35 The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!" 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?" 39 He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon.
Bible Study • Why is Jesus referred to the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world? • Read Exodus 12:1-13 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: 2 This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. 3 Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. 4 If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. 6 You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. 7 They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. 8 They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 9 Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs. 10 You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. 11 This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the LORD. 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt • Jesus asks disciples ‘what are you looking for’ after they begin to follow Jesus. When you follow Jesus, what are you looking for?
Augusta Victoria is a Hospital and Church located on the north side of Mount of Olives. It was built in 1907-1910, and named after Empress Augusta Victoria, the wife of German Kaiser Wilhelm II. Pastor Mark Brown is an ELCA Missionary and Lutheran World Federation’s Regional Representative
The hospital on the north side of the church is seen in the following photo. It serves the Arab Palestinian(Muslim and Christian) population of east Jerusalem. AVH provides many specialized services that are not easily accessible or that are unavailable in other hospitals in the occupied Palestinian Territories.
These specialties include ear, nose and throat surgery; adult and pediatric nephrology; radiation oncology; allergy and immunology; pediatric neurology; and certain gastrointestinal procedures. The Cancer Care Center at AVH is the first facility in the occupied Palestinian Territories to offer Radiation Oncology, and the only Radiation Oncology facility operating in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza. No other medical facility in the occupied Palestinian Territories offers pediatric dialysis. The US Government Provides AVH with new State-of the art radiation therapy system. Dr. Jill Biden visited AVH in March 2010 to announce that the US would donate $4.9 million to the hospital for a second medical linear accelerator.
Since its establishment, AVH has served the medical needs of Palestinian refugees through a contract with UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) that continues to this day. AVH serves all in need, regardless of race, religion, nationality, gender, or ability to pay. Hospital is licensed for 170 beds.
Mount of Olives Housing ProjectIn 1946 there were 31,400 Christians living in Jerusalem along with 99,000 Jews and 34,000 Muslims. Today, there are over 440,000 Jews, 200,000 Muslims, but less than 10,000 Christians. The shortage of affordable housing in Jerusalem is a key factor contributing to the departure of many Christians. The Lutheran World Federation (LWF), the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL), and the KaiserinAuguste Victoria Foundation (KAVF) are addressing the need for housing through the construction of 84 apartments on the LWF property on the Mount of Olives.
Olive Oil • Each year, Augusta Victoria Hospital (AVH), located on the Mount of Olives in East Jerusalem, receives a special blessing. Olive oil, pressed from olives from the 800 trees on the Lutheran World Federation property, is used in the kitchen of AVH and provides income to offset the hospital’s operational costs. • Grown by The Lutheran World Federation on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, the olives that this oil is made from are produced without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Local workers and volunteers harvest the olives by hand each fall. Following the harvest, most of the fruit is pressed at an olive press in BeitJala or Latrun. • Ordering Olive Oil • If requested, and as long as the annual supply lasts, donations of 30 USD or more will be acknowledged with a green hand-blown bottle from Hebron and a separate container of olive oil from the LWF Mount of Olive harvest. The donations received for the olive oil go to the Augusta Victoria Hospital, which provides a large amount of charity care, and other projects of the LWF Jerusalem program
Other Programs of Lutheran World Federation in Jerusalem • The LWF Vocational Training Program in Palestine operates vocational training centers and an outreach program through the Lutheran World Federation Department for World Service in Jerusalem and in cooperation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL). The Mission of the LWF/DWS is to provide programs that promote poverty alleviation, justice, peace, human rights and nation-building as witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. • The Scholarship Program assists Palestinian students from the occupied Palestinian Territories in pursuing an undergraduate education in the West Bank or Jerusalem. If there is no local university that offers the desired course of study, scholarship recipients may receive aid in attending another university in the Middle East. • The Workshops for the Blind aim to provide employment for blind workers, improve their standard of living, and help them to integrate into society. The products traditionally manufactured by the workshops were chosen because their manufacture is particularly suited to the skills of blind workers. These products, including brooms, baskets and rug-beaters, could also be manufactured by hand in such a way that they would rival factory-made goods of the same nature, and be sure to find a place in the local market (unlike similar projects in which workers from marginalized groups produce goods for sale to tourists, the Workshops for the Blind have always produced goods that are in demand in the local community)
Augusta Victoria Lutheran ChurchIt was established in 1907 for the German Protestant community in Palestine, and named after Augusta Viktoria of Schleswig-Holstein, wife of Kaiser Wilheim II who visited Jerusalem in 1898. The complex was completed in 1910. Its architect Robert Leibnitz drew inspiration from German castles especially Hohenzollern. Video
