  1. Chapter 2, Section 1

  2. Six Characteristics of Living Things • They have cells • They sense and respond to change • They reproduce • They have DNA • They use energy • They grow and develop

  3. Cells • All living things are composed of one or more cells • Cell: the smallest functional and structural unit of all living organisms • Has a membrane that separates it from the environment • Too small to see with the naked eye

  4. Sense and Response to Change • Stimulus – anything that causes a reaction or change in an organism or any part of an organism • Some examples of stimuli: • Chemicals • Gravity • Light • Sounds • Hunger

  5. Sense and Response to Change continued… • Eventhough an organisms environment may change the conditions in an organism have to stay the same this is called homeostasis. • Homeostasis – the maintenance of a stable internal environment

  6. Discussion Time!! What happens when you go outside and the air is cold?

  7. All living things have to REPRODUCE • Asexual Reproduction • Single parent • Identical offspring • Most single-celled organisms reproduce in this manner • Sexual Reproduction • Two parents • Offspring shares characteristics of both parents • Most animals and plants reproduce this way

  8. DNA! • DNA – deoxyribonucleic acid • Parents pass DNA to offspring • Heredity: the passing of genetic traits from parent to offspring

  9. Living things use ENERGY • Living things use energy to make food, break down the food and move materials in and out of the cells and/or the body. • Metabolism: the sum of all the chemical activities that the organism performs

  10. Living Things Grow and Develop Multiple-celled organisms Ex. Plants, humans When it grows the cells grow and get larger and the organism grows as well. Single-Celled organisms • Ex. Bacteria • When it grows the cells get larger and split and create more single celled organisms
