  2. Introduction 60% of the world’s population lives close to a coastal area. 70% of Nova Scotia’s population lives on the coast. Due to climate change over the last fifty years, our coastal areas are in danger. The land is sinking and the sea-level is rising. If another large storm hits Nova Scotia, the damage will be catastrophic. It will nearly ruin our economy, and the capital of our province may no longer stand. We need to take action. Though we cannot change the course of nature, we can protect our province. By reducing the rapid speed of the erosion of our coast, we will keep Nova Scotia about the water for a longer period of time. Planting trees, coral reeves and support from our government can keep reduce erosion, and keep Nova Scotia as the beautiful place it is.

  3. Climate Change • Climate Change has been progressing over years. There is a lot of factors that are influencing the Climate of the world to change. • Some causes of Climate Change are: • The amount of heat the sun is producing has been increasing. • The amount of fossil fuels being burnt are affecting the amount of heat produced by the sun (aka the greenhouse effect). • The amount of gases that are composed in the air is changing. • The position of the sun and the Earth. • Climate Change affects and changes our weather, the temperature of the land and water, and affects our water levels and the amount of land being eroded. • Since Climate Change has been increasing the amount of heat that the sun produces, the sun has been melting the glaciers and ice-caps at a faster rate, and causing the land to erode and water levels to rise. • With water levels rising the amount of land being washed away and eroded, has increased. If the land level is decreasing and the water level is decreasing, then soon enough the land near the shore will flood.

  4. Erosion With our sea-levels rising our coastlines are eroding. We are losing more of our beaches every day. If we try to prevent erosion, it will protect Nova Scotia for longer. What is Erosion? Erosion comes in more then one form. It’s a continuous process of materials breaking down. Its a process that’s always going, and it can be caused by either a natural or artificial cause. It can be land, water, wind, or an ice glacier. What are some main factors that cause Erosion? Water and wind are some of the most powerful causes of erosion. Water can easily dissolve and change into things while the wind can transport. Humans are also a cause of erosion mainly because of bad land management. One serious human cause of erosion is overgrazing. Overgrazing is when plants are exposed to a lot of grazing for extended periods of time.

  5. The Government’s Involvement To prevent erosion from happening so rapidly, it is necessary for the government to be involved. One way to help would be to pass a law that every new house or cottage being constructed on the shore must be a certain distance from the coastline. This distance would vary depending on the slope of the land, the tides and other factors affecting the sea level. This would help, however would be hard to monitor, very complicated and a long process to pass the law. But this is not the only way the government can help. The government spends millions of dollars every year on road projects around the coast. If we do not reduce erosion, our newly paved, million dollar roads will soon be non-existent. Our government needs to get more involved. If they provide funding we can use that funding towards our effort to prevent erosion.

  6. Planting Vegetation How will plants help us? They are a more natural, globally friendly way to help reduce the speed of erosion. Planting vegetation will provide a “cover” to the ground and help reduce the impact of wind and heavy rain on our coastlines. As the roots of the plants grow bigger and stronger, they will hold the ground together, not letting it erode so easily. One of the best type of plants to plant to help prevent erosion are creeper plants, because they cover the ground, slowing down erosion. Some examples of creeper plants are Bignonia venusta, Centella, Bacopa and Mint. Wildflowers, small trees and shrubs are also good plants to plant.

  8. Artificial Reefs Artificial reefs are another more natural, globally friendly way of preventing erosion. An artificial reef dissipates the wave energy before it reaches the shore, resulting in greater protection for the beaches. Artificial reefs are not only beneficial for reducing erosion, they also will boost the Nova Scotian economy. A large part of Nova Scotia’s economy is based off of the shore. Tourists first stop is almost always a nice place along the shore. An artificial reef would attract more tourists, create more job opportunities and bring in money for the government. Though the government would have to pay out money to fund the reefs, in the long run they would be making money. So, not only do artificial reefs reduce erosion, they also will help to boost our economy and keep the people happy!

  10. Conclusion Nova Scotia is a beautiful province. We do not want to lose our Atlantic paradise. By stopping erosion we will keep our province alive longer. Vegetation along the coast, artificial reeves and support from our government will help us do this.
