Interactions of Air, Water, and Land ED7204T: Pedagogy & Curriculum II Dr. O’Connor-Petruso, Fall 2011 MST Inquiry Unit Presentation Created by: Ana Chung Svetlana Khvatikova Marva Rudder Intended for a Grade 4 Audience
NYS Science Learning Standards Standard 4: The Physical Setting • Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science. Key Idea 2: Many of the phenomena that we observe on Earth involve interactions among components of air, water, and land.
Lesson 1: Water You Sayin’ Cycle? Bloom’s Taxonomy: Knowledge, Application & Comprehension Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences: Visual/Spatial, Linguistic, Interpersonal PET Manipulative Skill: Unknown Object– Students engage in an internet activity and explore the functions of the water cycle Web 2.0 Resource
Lesson 1: Water You Sayin’ Cycle? http://wordcentral.com/ http://www.epa.gov/safewater/kids/flash/flash_watercycle.html Behavioral Objectives: • To define the process of the water cycle while working in pairs. • To describe the process of the water cycle through an oral presentation.
Lesson 3: Physical or Chemical? Bloom’s Taxonomy: Application Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences: Visual/Spatial , Linguistic , InterpersonalPET Manipulative Skill: Grouping Objects – Observe and classify pictures Mathematical Representation of Data: Picto-graph
Lesson 3: Physical or Chemical? Behavioral Objectives: To classify objects physical or chemical weathering using a picto-graph. To define the terms physical weathering and chemical weathering using a worksheet.
Lesson 3: Physical or Chemical? Mathematical Representation of Data – Pictograph Which areas had physical weathering? Which areas had chemical weathering? How many places did Area 2 have an effect on? How many places did Area 4 have an effect on? What is the total number of places the 4 areas had physical and chemical weathering? Key: Physical Weathering = 5 places Chemical Weathering = 10 places
Lesson 5: There’s A Hurricane A’ Comin’ Bloom’s Taxonomy: Comprehension, Knowledge, Synthesis Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences:Interpersonal, Visual/Spatial, Linguistic Scavenger Hunt
Lesson 5: There’s A Hurricane A’ Comin Behavioral Objectives: To perform a scavenger hunt using a worksheet. To demonstrate how to work cooperatively in groups of three or four using our Natural Disaster Filamentality webpage. http://www.kn.att.com/wired/fil/pages/listnaturalfl.html
Lesson 6: Let’s Stock Up Bloom’s Taxonomy: Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences: Visual/Spatial, Logical/Mathematical Graphic Organizer – KWL chart Mathematical Representation of Data – Excel Spreadsheet and Bar Graph
Lesson 6: Let’s Stock Up! Behavioral Objectives: To create a mathematical spreadsheet using a line graph in Microsoft Office Excel and track two stock for five days. To compute the statistical value of the mean, the median, the mode, and the range. To compare and write about two stocks.
Lesson 6: Let’s Stock Up! Mathematical Representation of Data – Line Graph Annotated Analysis The tracking of Home Depot Inc. and Lowe’s stocks from 10/17/11 through 10/21/11 indicates that both stocks performed well each day. The graphs showed the increase of prices of both stocks for five days. On no particular day did any of the stock repeat themselves, there’s no mode for Home Depot Inc. or Lowe’s indicating a significant gain in both stock's value. Home Depot started with a price of $34.65 and increased each day by an average price of $0.53 ending the week with an increased price of $36.86. The stock had a range of $2.21 overall, the mean of the stock was $35.72, the median was $35.73, and the stock had a minimum value of $34.65 and maximum value of $36.86. Home Depot's stock prices for the entire week showed a great overall performance for the week. Lowe’s stock showed similar behavior in the stock market. Lowe’s stock price started with a minimum value of $20.80 ending with a maximum value $22.13. The average price increase was $0.56, the mean was $21.40, the median was $21.49, and the stock had a range of $1.33. Lowe’s stock price on each given day was hopeful. Both stocks made a small profit each day for investors, making them stable stocks for long term investments.

Filamentality Web Page What a Disaster! An Internet Hotlist on Natural Disasters http://www.kn.att.com/wired/fil/pages/listnaturalfl.html IntroductionOur MST Unit entitled, “Interactions of Air Water and Land Natural Disasters” allows teachers, students and parents to retrieved insightful information from useful websites on natural disasters. These websites take students on a scavenger hunt by allowing them to search for important facts and information on nature's greatest natural disasters.
Filamentality Web Page Students will be using the Filamentality webpage during Lesson 5. During the lesson students will be working in groups of four based on their learning needs and abilities, social skills, and academic strength which is assessed prior to the lesson. They will be assigned various roles such as researcher, writer, editor, and leader. Each group will be assigned to a computer station and visit the Filamentality website: http://www.kn.att.com/wired/fil/pages/listnaturalfl.html They will be responsible for working as a team and find ten hurricane related words found on their worksheets. They have 20 minutes to scavenge online for the answers using the website links. After the scavenger hunt, the class with regroup to share their results and feelings regarding their online scavenger hunt experience.
Filamentality Web Page Worksheet – Students will be able to answer the following questions.
Filamentality Web Page The Internet Resources • Information • Experiments • Videos • Games/ Activities • Teacher’s Resources
