The Existing Weather Station in Tiksi – Measurements since 1937
Some scientific questions driving the Tiksi project It is located at the confluence of Atlantic and Pacific influences on the Arctic Atmosphere resulting in a wide variety of air masses affecting the climate at Tiksi. Tiksi is located near the mouth of the Lena River which is the second largest river draining into the Arctic Ocean. The Lena is the only major Russian River for which most of the drainage basin is underlain by permafrost making it hydro-logically complex and particularly vulnerable to climatic warming. The Laptev Sea is an area of significant ice production, and wide variability is at least particularly attributed to synoptic perturbations. Having an observatory central to this region will lead to a better understanding of processes that lead to decreases in the perennial pack.
Existing Components • NSF infrastructure contributions • NOAA project coordination and long-term design • NSF funding of science projects • Government of Sakha road and power improvements • Roshydromet weather station upgrades • NOAA observation programs • NASA observation programs • FMI observation programs • NILU observation programs
U.S./Finnish/Russian Site visit in August 2005 • Science Plan written for Tiksi Observatory • Implementation Plan written for Tiksi Observatory • Development of U.S.-Russian MOUs, agreement letters and permission documents to facilitate transfer of equipment, samples in and out of Russia • Investigation of existing research activities in Tiksi area (Russian PGO and Japanese JAMSTEC and NIPR) • Planning meeting in March 2007
Current Status of Construction (1) New Weather Station built in 2006 (2) Work requirements document just completed for Special Studies facility to be built in 2007

Making friends with the other disciplines to address system science is critical
Rational for Intensive Atmospheric Observatories • There is an emphasis on HOW the climate is changing • Long term monitoring • International programs (GAW, NDACC, etc.) • Quality Control • Satellite validation • BUT • Also need an emphasis on WHY the climate is changing • Process Studies • Model Support • ALSO • Need to respond to the NOW issues • Sudden events
Official names for the two facilities: Polyarka Weather Station and The Hydrometeorological Observatory of Tiksi
