  1. By the end of the day today: I will be able to analyze a change in matter and determine if it is a chemical or physical change. Physical and Chemical Properties

  2. Why does this Matter? • Matter • Has mass and takes up space • Everything around us is matter

  3. What’s the Difference? • Matter can change • Examples: Freeze, cut, burn, etc. • 2 types of changes • Physical changes • Chemical changes

  4. Physical Changes • Definition: when the state or form of matter is changed without changing its chemical composition. • Examples: cutting, freezing, melting, etc.

  5. Changes in State: Vocabulary

  6. Chemical Change • Definition: takes place on a molecular level and produces a new chemical substance. • A chemical change always involves a chemical reaction.

  7. Where is the Evidence??? • Evidence of a chemical change: • color change, gas production, and release of heat, light, odor, or sound. • Examples: Burning (combustion), rusting, tarnishing and fermenting

  8. Name That Change!! • You have 5 seconds to make a decision about whether the change shown is physical or chemical. • Lift up your card indicating which kind of change you think it is.

  20. Organize that Change!! • If you’re at an odd seat, turn to the next even seat (12, 34, etc.) • Organize the given scenarios into two piles: physical change and chemical change • You have four minutes to work with your partner! • Good Luck!
