The UK Coaching Framework Vision • to create a cohesive, ethical, inclusive and valued coaching system where skilled coaches support children, players and athletes at all stages of their development in sport
Members • UK Home Countries Disability Sport Organisations (Federation of Disability Sport Wales, Disability Sport Northern Ireland, Scottish Disability Sport, English Federation of Disability Sport • Sport coach UK / Coaching Northern Ireland • Paralympics GB • Sports Leaders UK • Sports Equity Group • UK Sport and Home Nation Sports Councils • Youth Sport Trust
UKDS Coaching Leadership and Learning Group Vision • Develop and support inclusive, equitable and appropriate coach education, leadership, training and community development programmes across the UK
Objectives • Ensure that the key principles of the UK Coaching Framework vision and the 5 strategic action areas, are fully inclusive • Ensure that all leadership courses and access to leadership opportunities are fully inclusive • Develop and deliver community sport training and education programmes for the public and voluntary sectors in disability sport
Inclusive Coaching Guidelines • Effective communication techniques (communication skills) • Ability to adapt and modify (differentiation, adaptation and progression) • Focus on ability NOT disability (functional v medical models) • Understand and use the coaching environment (appropriately modify and manipulate) • Health and safety
UKDS-CLL Disability sport has own unique pathways in sport requiring coaching interventions at all levels in the continuum Position supported by the Disability Sport CEO Group – input to this presentation.
UKDS-CLL Disability sport coaching in some cases, requires additional knowledge and understanding of technical coach education requirements
UKDS-CLL National Governing Bodies need to be challenged to ensure that their coach education modules are fully inclusive in terms of their resource development and delivery to candidates
UKDS-CLL Disability sport agenda is already very broad • wide range of impairment groups • necessity for pan disability approach • too much emphasis on Paralympic sport is not the best option
UKDS-CLL • The UKDS-CLL group has a collective vision and has made considerable progress in just over two years • Specific representation on the Coaching Strategy Group would be hugely beneficial to all parties
Key Milestones • Identify players and coach pathways for disability sport 2007 • Development of a UK DIT workshop and resource 2008/2009 • Further milestones 2012 and 2016
