  18. 1. What duties and obligations were central to the feudal system? • The feudal system was the political and social structure that provided protection. • Only nobles were required to perform feudal duties. • A lord granted a fief to a vassal in exchange for military service. • In return, a vassal had to provide their lord with knights, pay ransom money, and provide housing and food upon a visit.

  19. 2. How did the manorial system govern the medieval economy? • The manor was the basic economic unit and represented the lord’s wealth and power. • The goal of the lord was to make his manor self-sufficient. • The lord was obligated to protect the peasants and serfs on his manor. • In return, they provided the labor and worked the manor land.

  20. 3. How did the church play a vital role in medieval life? The pope claimed authority over all secular rulers (kings) and used the threat of excommunication to maintain their power. The Church administered the sacraments (church rituals), which were necessary to obtain salvation (heaven). In daily life, the church provided social welfare for the poor, represented the only educated group in society, and contributed to agriculture and trading.

  21. 4. What led to the decline of feudalism? • After the Crusades, trade increased and led to the development of towns and cities. • Merchants obtained charters from the kings in order to run their own towns and avoid paying taxes to the feudal lords • Peasants left the manor to find jobs in the newly formed towns. • People began to use coins instead of labor to pay rent and buy goods.
