  1. Using Impulsive SEP Events as Probes of Solar-Heliospheric Structures and the Coronal Origins of the Slow Solar Wind C.M.S. Cohen, R. Gomez-Herrero, D.K. Haggerty, G.M Mason, N. Nitta, M.E. Wiedenbeck

  2. 3He-rich SEP events • Characteristics • Short, low intensity • 3He-rich, Fe-rich • Associated with impulsive flares, type III bursts, impulsive e- events • Easily identifiable with current SEP instrumentation • ACE: ULEIS, SIS • STEREO: SIT, LET

  3. Association with Slow SW • Kocharov et al. [2008] study • Super-imposed epoch analysis found most events in slow or declining SW

  4. Association with Slow SW • Kocharov et al. [2008] study • Super-imposed epoch analysis found most events in slow or declining SW • Often bracketed by fast coronal hole SW

  5. Association with Slow SW • Kocharov et al. [2008] study • Super-imposed epoch analysis found most events in slow or declining SW • Often bracketed by fast coronal hole SW • Similar field configurations • Acceleration and release of impulsive SEPs due to reconnection • Fisk suggests reconnection with emerging fields releases slow SW

  6. Association with Slow SW • Kocharov et al. [2008] study • Super-imposed epoch analysis found most events in slow or declining SW • Often bracketed by fast coronal hole SW • Similar field configurations • Acceleration and release of impulsive SEPs due to reconnection • Fisk suggests reconnection with emerging fields releases slow SW • Association with Active Regions

  7. 3He-rich SEP Events as a Tool • Requires magnetic connection • Removes ambiguity of sources (CH vs AR)

  8. 3He-rich SEP Events as a Tool • Requires magnetic connection • Removes ambiguity of sources (CH vs AR) • Identifies sustained connection

  9. 3He-rich SEP Events as a Tool • Requires magnetic connection • Removes ambiguity of sources (CH vs AR) • Identifies sustained connection • In combination with PFSS • Test PFSS model • Provide input to improve model

  10. Proposal Investigations • Characteristics of Sources • Characteristics of associated SW

  11. Proposal Investigations • Characteristics of Sources • Characteristics of associated SW • Longitudinal extent of connection

  12. Proposal Investigations • Characteristics of Sources • Characteristics of associated SW • Longitudinal extent of connection • Evolution of connection/sources

  13. Contributions to Team Effort • Identifying time periods when 3He-rich SEP data (either discrete events or extended periods) provide important constraints on solar wind models and provide a list of these periods to the team. • Identify solar source regions associated with extended periods of 3He-rich SEP event activity, characterize the time evolution of the connection, and work with solar wind modelers to apply these results as constraints on solar wind models. • Determine the properties of selected discrete 3He-rich SEP events for use in interplanetary propagation studies as well as properties of their source regions, and work with interplanetary transport modelers interpret those properties.
