Embedding innovation into teaching and learning practices Operational contexts for embedding outcomes from national projects in HE institutions
Plan for the day • Introductions • Brainstorming on embedding • Project context • LUNCH 13-00 • Institutional context • Break • Consultation paper
About us & the project • Project: • funded by the LTSN GC • based at University of Warwick • Team: • Jay Dempster, Peter Jackson, CAP, Warwick • Frances Deepwell, CHED, Coventry University • Review of generic ICT-related national projects: • 6 TLTP3, 1 FDTL3, 3 SCOTCIT • Success factors in embedding new practices: • activities, organisation, networks, links, impact, support • Knowledge to inform and assist others: projects, institutions, programmes, partners, funding bodies • Innovation embedding = TRANSFERABILITY
Transferability 1. LTSN funding: PROJECTS • Review successful embedding • Analyse experiences, factors, approaches • Consult with stakeholders: funding bodies, support organisations, institutional academic developers • Offer a framework of approaches for embedding innovation from development 2. TLTP3 transferability funding: INSTITUTIONS • Review of structures and processes in 7 universities • Analysis against current strategies & objectives • Share and discuss case studies arising • Plan of action for building capacity for: • responding to innovation • evaluating own structures and practices • embedding effective new learning and teaching
Purpose of the consultation • Explore national and programme issues • in the light of the review and analysis of a selection of national projects • Consider what is helpful • for both projects and institutions with respect to national support and programme management • Extract a set of good practices • with national bodies to inform future funding programmes, project and institutional support • Determine issues and recommendations • to form a consultation paper for funding councils and other stakeholders.

Brainstorm • In your professional experience, what is the best example of successful embedding that you have come across? • How do you account for its success? • In other words, what do you feel were the main reason in your example that the idea became embedded and resulted in a change in practice?
Project context successes in embedding innovation fromnational projects
Group activity: Supporting projects to embed • DIVIDE INTO GROUPS A & B • What frameworks for national funding and support do you feel work well to assist projects? • What in your experiences should be improved? • What in your view ought to change? (maybe radically!)
Institutional context for embedding innovation fromnational projects
Generic national projects • Projects develop within specific context but outcomes focus on wider applicability • Wide variation between consortium institutions of structures and working practices • Cross disciplinary differences • Educational ‘ideas’ rather than technology ‘products’ • Institutional ICT infrastructure difficulties • Teaching development incentives • Emergent ILT & evolving CTI-LTSN support network • Complexities of the operational contexts for embedding innovation from projects at institutional level
How institutions might use findings Institutional partners agreed to make use of the evaluation framework to: • evaluate of own structures & practices • explore solutions towards appropriate implementation plans for own strategic objectives • share and discuss approaches with other institutions
Institutional review • Avoid “surveying” • Focus on strategies, perceptions and experiences with regard to structure and working practices • Consider the processes of innovation and embedding within the institutional strategic objectives and processes • In the light of: • own experiences • project review • national perspectives
Organisation & Direction Response to Innovation Institutional Thinking Support for Embedding Operational context Strategies Objectives Structures Engagement Involvement Collaboration Evaluation Transfer Planning Staff development Support models Recognition & reward
Institutional case studies • Present current institutional organisational direction, structures, processes and responses to educational innovation (in ICT) • Identifyfactors the institution believes impact the greatest on the process of embedding of L&T innovation (in ICT) • Devise plan to develop own practices and enhance support in this area
Emerging institutional factors • Senior level support • Staffing: resources, retention of expertise • Engaging departments/schools • Motivating lecturers: support, promotion • Time & timing • Decision making structures • Forums for debate • ICT infrastructure & technical support
Group activity: Supporting institutions to embed • DIVIDE INTO GROUPS A & B • What frameworks for national funding and support do you feel work well to assist institutions? • What in your experiences should be improved? • What in your view ought to change? (maybe radically!)
Summary of feedback from national funding bodies and support providers
How national bodies might use review National bodies can make use of the review: • To evaluate own structures & practices and inform future funding programmes and support provision • To advise & guide projects and institutions on effective institutional structures and practices to support educational innovation from projects • To share and discuss approaches with other stakeholders through a consultation paper
Consultation paper • What do you believe constitutes successful embedding of project innovation in institutional practice? • What areas are seen to work well in supporting projects and in supporting institutions? • Where is there shared understanding between funding programmes and support bodies about areas for improvement and/or change? • Where is further debate/clarification/study needed for areas where opinion differs? • Advise whether wider/deeper evaluation of project experiences is required/desired • State whether the approach taken by the project is a valuable evaluation framework for future programmes.
