Why did the Renaissance Start in Italy? • Trade routes (that carried goods from the Silk Road) passed through the Italian city-states • Cities amassed great wealth through trade and manufacturing • Some cities specialized in certain products • Banks and Money came back into use • Wealthy citizens used their money to promote the arts and learning PATRONS • Since the towns were democratically run, the citizens and businessmen promoted public art projects
What is Humanism • Philosophy of the Renaissance • Focused on individual achievement and success • Valued being “well rounded” • Studied on the ancients Greeks and Romans (the “classics”) • Valued more than just religious teachings • “Man is the measure of all things.” • Saw the medieval period as backward and barbaric
