Colonial Trade Facts • Mercantilism: an economic system where England controlled what goods were trade to and from the colonies. Timber, Fur, Tobacco Machines, Hardware, Furniture
Mercantilism Limits…….. • Free Enterprise: Economic competition with little government control • Colonists could not buy or sell goods directly to other foreign countries. • Leads to unfavorable balance of trade for colonies.
Triangular Trade • Named for trade between colonies, England and Africa • Colonies: Export raw materials and rum. Imports slaves and manufactured goods. • England: Exports manufactured goods, guns and iron. Imports raw materials and gold. • Africa: Exports slaves, gold, and ivory. Imports guns and iron.
The Middle Passage • Named for the middle part of the Triangular trade which brought slaves to the colonies • Slave trade brought around 10 million Africans across the Atlantic Ocean. • Common threats: • Starvation • Dehydration • Diseases
