What is health? Take a couple of minutes to write down all the words you associate with the word health and think of someone in the public eye that you think is healthy? Why do you consider them healthy?
Physical Health Emotional Health Social Health Mental Health Spiritual Health Health Defined: The 5 Components of Health
Component 1: Physical Health • Participate in regular exercise • Maintain proper nutrition by eating right • Maintain a healthy weight • Being free of disease and sickness
Component 2: Emotional Health • Expressing emotions in a positive and non-destructive way • Copes with unpleasant emotions and does not get overwhelmed by them • Knows where to get emotional support
Component 3: Social Health • The quality of your relationships with friends, family, teachers, and others you come in contact with • Respects others • Avoids those who do not treat him or her with respect and tolerance • Being popular does not necessarily mean you are “socially healthy”
Component 4: Mental Health • The ability to recognize reality and cope with the demands of daily life • Having high self-esteem (feeling comfortable and happy with yourself) • Strongly influenced by state of emotional health • Sometimes intensely troubling times develop mental illnesses
Component 5: Spiritual Health • Having spiritual direction and purpose • Maintaining harmonious relationships with other living things • Living according to one’s ethics, morals, and values • Values = a strong belief or ideal
Wellness • Achieving a person’s best in all 5 components of health • Must find a balance for all 5 components

Heredity • Biological traits/genes that you inherit from your parents • You can NOT change your heredity!

Attitude A person’s way of thinking (how they think and feel in different situations) You have COMPLETE control over this
Behavior • Actions people take • You have complete control over this • Or do you?
Media • Any public form of communication • What are these forms? • You have some control over this
Technology Anything created to improve the quality of life or increase efficiency You have some control over this Is technology positive or negative on our health?
Overall Wellness Continuum • Why a continuum? • It can always change and there is a wide range
Overall Wellness • How do I figure out my overall wellness? • Look at each component of health and score 1 to 10. • Add up those six number and divide it by 60. • Example: Physical Health = 8, Mental Health= 7, Emotional Health= 8, Social Health= 8, Spiritual Health = 7, Environmental Health= 6. Total Health = 8+7+8+8+7+6 = 44. Wellness= 44/60= .7333 or 73% This is average (like having a C grade
