A significant protion of India’s and AP’s disease burden is related to behavioural practices that can be influenced through Health Education. Preventive Health Strategies largely depend on Health Education initiatives. Rationale
Genesis Under European Commission Sector Investment Programme, a mandate has been given to IIHFW for development health manpower As part of this initiative, two academic courses – Bachelor’s in Health Education and PG Diploma in Public Health Management are proposed at the Institute
Unlike other States in the country, Andhra Pradesh has a Health Educator Post in every Primary Health Centre. There are over 1500 PHCs in the State. Most of the Health Educators positioned in PHC are above 45 years. Any Helath Worker/Supervisor after acquiring DHE/BHE qualifications from Government-recognised institutions can become eligible for promotion as Health Educator.

The PG Diploma in Health Education is conducted by the four following institutes in the country • Family Welfare Training and Research Centre, Mumbai (one year) • Gandhigram Institute of Rural Health and Family Welfare Trust, Tamil Nadu (one year) • All India Institute of Hygiene and Public health, Kolkatta (one year) • Central Health Education Bureau, New Delhi (two years)
None of the Universities or Institutes including NTR Health University, first of its kind in the country have started a Diploma in Health Education in A.P. in the past. Scores of students i.e. in service personnel from AP seeking promotion are pursuing diploma in Health Education from the four metropolitan cities AP students dominate in Mumbai and Gandhi gram institutes. 60% and 50% of the students studying in the institutes are from AP. Immense Scope Immense potential for the BHE course at the institute due to importance accorded to Health Education in National and State Health and Population Policies and promotional matters. Recommendations of the series workshops conducted during 2006 & 2007 Objective of the course To develop a cadre of professional health education / communication specialists to effectively plan, implement, monitor and evaluate health education interventions in community and hospital settings.
Process of finalizing the design and syllabus of the BHE course, 2006 - 2007 • IIHFW faculty visit to the Institutes offering DHE course at Gandhigram, Tamil Nadu and Mumbai in October- December 2005 • Internal workshop to study and analysis of existing DHE syllabus offered three institutes in the country • Jan and Feb 2006 : Ist workshop to workout the potential of the course particularly in AP Feb 2006 • IInd workshop to workout draft design, eligibility, duration and syllabus with experts • March 2006 : IIIrd workshop to fine tune the syllabus with subject experts

Eligibility: A candidate for admission to BHE course needs to be a graduate in any discipline from an University recognized by Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Reservation of Seats 1. The BHE course is open to candidates belonging to two categories, namely- in-service candidates (50%) and other category (50%). Reservations for BC, SC & ST and women as per Osmania University norms. Fee: Rs. 25,000 (excluding boarding and lodging)

Methodology A blend of instructor oriented, hands on training, community based learning and self learning. Classroom teaching, assignments, field visits to community centres and PHCs, Demonstrations, AV workshops, project reports.
